The MCU’s Mephisto Confirmation Was Actually Set Up 12 Years Ago

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 3, "Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials"
Mephisto was finally referenced by name in Agatha All Along episode 3, but his MCU debut was actually teased 12 years ago, back in Phase 1"s The Avengers. While there have been many villains speculated to be joining the MCU in recent years, none have been more heavily rumored than Mephisto. WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Loki have all teased the legendary Marvel villain"s debut, but Agatha All Along episode 3, "Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials," one-upped them all in the best way.
Introduced to Marvel Comics in 1968"s Silver Surfer #3, Mephisto, based on the Faust demon Mephistopheles, is one of Marvel"s most consistent and formidable supervillains. He has persisted as a villain to many heroes, including Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch, among many others. As one of Marvel"s most notable villains, it"s a wonder Mephisto hasn"t appeared in the live-action MCU yet. Agatha All Along perfectly lays the foundations for Mephisto"s MCU debut, but this isn"t the first time the demon has been mentioned by name.
The MCU Has Finally Name-Checked Mephisto Jennifer Kale Referenced Agents Of Mephisto In Agatha All Along Episode 3 Close Agatha All Along episode 3 saw Agatha Harkness, "Teen" and their new coven experience the first trial of the Witches" Road, taking place in a coastal house and centered around a bottle of poisoned wine. While searching for a corkscrew, "Teen" and Jennifer Kale discuss Agatha Harkness" trustworthiness, or lack thereof, and Kale reveals the rumor that Harkness traded her son, Nicholas Scratch, in exchange for the Darkhold. She notes that it"s just what some people say, while others suggest Scratch may have become a demon, or even an agent of Mephisto.
Related Every Time The MCU Has Hinted At Mephisto Mephisto hasn’t shown up in the MCU yet, but with the number of references, hints, setups, and rumors so far, his appearance seems almost inevitable.
After several years of the legendary demon from Marvel Comics being overtly teased in the MCU, with the most notable hints appearing in 2021"s WandaVision, it is a huge relief to finally hear Mephisto"s name spoken in the MCU. There has been speculation that the demon could make his first appearance in Agatha All Along, while he has also been rumored to appear in 2025"s Ironheart series, or perhaps even his own Special Presentation. While Agatha All Along name-dropped Mephisto for the first time, however, his name has been seen in the MCU before.
The Avengers Featured A Mephisto Reference In 2012 The Avengers Teased Mephisto 12 Years Before Agatha All Along Mephisto"s name first appeared in the MCU back in 2012"s The Avengers, 12 years before Agatha All Along episode 3 would mark the first time it was actually heard. Towards the beginning of The Avengers, Nick Fury approaches Steve Rogers with a mission to reacquire the Tesseract that was stolen by Loki upon his arrival on Earth. In the file that Fury hands Rogers detailing what they know about the Tesseract, Mephisto"s name appears, though Rogers" thumb blocks the text in a way that the context of Mephisto being mentioned is unclear.
While Marvel Studios" teasing of Mephisto really picked up steam from WandaVision onwards, it seems the demon"s MCU debut has been set up for over a decade. Mephisto"s name appearing in The Avengers and finally being mentioned in Agatha All Along perfectly creates the opportunity for the villain to appear in live-action. Mephisto"s longevity in the MCU means he could be revealed to have been pulling strings behind the scenes for many years, perhaps becoming the biggest and most effective villain the MCU has ever seen.
