The Mandalorian"s Timeline Raises Massive Questions About The Star Wars Original Trilogy

Summary
  • The Ahsoka series confirms that the Great Purge of Mandalore occurred after the Galactic Civil War, posing a question about Mandalorians in the original Star Wars trilogy.
  • Mandalorians, aside from Boba Fett, were entirely absent during the original trilogy, despite their significant role in the Clone Wars and their liberation from the Empire.
  • It is suggested that Bo-Katan may have been occupied dealing with loyalists and the aftermath of the Empire's rule on Mandalore, explaining their absence during the Galactic Civil War.
While the timeline of The Mandalorian has started to receive more clarity, one major question has started to arise regarding the original Star Wars trilogy. The first live-action Star Wars Disney+ TV show became the first on-screen story to tackle the New Republic Era, taking place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi. The Mandalorian season 1 introduced the Great Purge of Mandalore and established it as an event that devastated the homeworld of the Mandalorians, the timeline of which was unknown for years.
Now, the Ahsoka series has given the Great Purge a firm place on the Star Wars timeline. The droid Huyang is the one who confirms that the fall of Mandalore took place after the Galactic Civil War, likely as a part of Emperor Palpatine's Operation: Cinder. This means that up until the end of the war, Mandalore still would have been flourishing under Bo-Katan Kryze's rule, free of Imperial influence as she first accomplished with Sabine Wren just after the war officially began. This truth, however, poses a huge question about Mandalorians in the context of the original Star Wars trilogy.

The only person seen in Mandalorian armor during the original trilogy is Boba Fett. Otherwise, any sign of Mandalorians or their armor is entirely absent from the events of the Galactic Civil War as seen in this part of the Skywalker saga. This seems strange, considering how big of a role the planet played in the Clone Wars, despite their neutrality. Many Mandalorians despised the idea of neutrality, including Bo-Katan herself. As the ruler of Mandalore during the Galactic Civil War, then, it seems interesting that she didn't somehow get involved, especially considering that it was Sabine and her rebel cell that helped Bo-Katan secure the victory over the Empire on Mandalore just before the war.
