Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Superman and Lois season 3, episode 4, "Too Close to Home."A continuing joke regarding General Sam Lane's efforts to make his grandson Jordan get a haircut resulted in a major plot hole in
Superman and Lois season 3. A career military man, Sam continually expressed his disapproval of Jordan Kent's trademark curls and repeatedly tried to talk him into getting "the old high and tight" given to all soldiers upon enlistment, without success. The events of Superman and Lois season 3, episode 4, "Too Close to Home," gave General Lane the chance he needed to finally force the issue.
While taking a seemingly friendly drive into Smallville, Sam confronted Jordan with photos from a Department of Defense satellite that showed him flying without the hood of his jacket up to obscure his features. Sam declared Jordan's distinctive hairdo "a big billboard telling the world who you really are" and stopped his car in front of Smallville's barber shop, insisting that Jordan had to get a haircut for the sake of his secret identity. Ignoring that Sam's issues with Jordan's haircut seemed to be based more upon his old-fashioned preferences than concern for his safety, this scene exposed a plot hole regarding how Kryptonians care for their hair on Earth.
Superman And Other Kryptonians Have Super-Strong Hair
It is a long-established trope in the Superman comics that the hair of a Kryptonian is just as invulnerable as their skin. This raised the question of just how Superman could get a haircut or remove his facial hair when no Earth razor could break his Stubble of Steel. Originally, the answer was that Superman's hair simply just didn't grow while under a yellow sun. However, after Crisis on Infinite Earths, it was revealed that Superman cut it himself reflecting his heat vision off a mirrored surface. He did the same thing in Superman: The Animated Series.
