Early reactions for the final Marvel Cinematic Universe movie of 2023 are finally here as critics are sharing their thoughts on The Marvels. After the first Captain Marvel movie became a smashing success for Marvel Studios, the sequel is finally arriving this week, bringing Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau/Photon together. With Kamala and Monica's roles being set up through Ms. Marvel and WandaVision respectively, The Marvels will combine their arcs with Carol's journey.
After a number of delays, The Marvels is arriving in theaters this Friday. As with most Marvel movies, critics and select members of the media have gotten to preview the film in advance and are now finally sharing their initial thoughts on the Captain Marvel sequel. Screen Rant's Molly Freeman called The Marvels "an absolute BLAST," as she commended director Nia DaCosta's work with the latest MCU installment while also praising Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani's performances.
Fandango's Erik Davis praised DaCosta's The Marvels as being "a great time at the movies," while celebrating its good pacing, and brings up Vellani as stealing the show with her "wide-eyed "Holy Cow!" humor to the story."
The Hollywood Handle referred to The Marvels as "a lovely, surprising, decent, and delightful experience," and also referred to the final act as having some great "emotional beats."
Film critic William Bibbiani went on to say that The Marvels is "one of the better times I've had in a theater with a Marvel movie in the last couple of years," and describes the dynamic with the characters as a "wonderful ensemble."
Buzzfeed's Nora Dominick admitted that as someone who "adore[s] Captain Marvel and WandaVision," The Marvels was something she was ready to have fun with, and she praised the three female stars for their "superb comedic timing together, but also beautifully worked in the touching scenes."
TVInsider's Kelli Boyle described The Marvels as "the next great addition to the MCU" that is "full of personality," while also enjoying the fight choreography and also how Marvel Studios "finally let Samuel L. Jackson just be funny."
Fandom's Eric Goldman brought up how The Marvels, following "the big low of [Ant-Man and The Wasp:] Quantumania and the high of GotG 3," is "a solid middle of the path."
The Mary Sue's Rachel Leishman spoke about how The Marvels is not only "so much fun," but also how it is "action-packed goodness," as she loved the female trinity's dynamic on screen.
Film Poser's Josie Meléndez labeled The Marvels "the most fun I've had in theaters all year," as she went on to praise Vellani's presence with her co-stars.
Screen Rant's Joseph Deckelmeier stated that "all I wanted from The Marvels was to have a good time and that movie is stupid fun!" He also added that Kamala, Monica, and Carol's presence in the movie is a big enjoyment.
Screen Rant's Cooper Hood also shared how The Marvels is "big, a bit silly, and a lot of fun," particularly due to the power swapping that helped add for "unique action scenes" while also teasing "lots of MCU connections and teases for the future."
