Thor 5 Can Be The God Of Thunder"s Biggest Challenge Yet (By Being His Smallest)

Summary
  • Thor 5 could see the introduction of Hercules as the primary villain, bringing Thor back to his roots in his likely swansong solo movie.
  • Lowering the stakes in Thor 5 would be the best thing for the character, allowing for a more subdued tone and a character-driven sendoff.
  • The inclusion of Hercules as a challenge for Thor aligns with the shift towards a more emotional story, showcasing Thor's growth and maturity throughout his MCU journey.
Although Thor 5 is yet to be confirmed, the Thor: Love & Thunder sequel could take the shape of Thor's biggest (yet smallest) MCU challenge yet. Thor: Love & Thunder left Thor acting as father to Gorr's daughter, Love, as they tag-team heroics across the universe while New Asgard remains in the capable hands of King Valkyrie. The climax was pretty open-ended, leaving Thor in a similar place to where he was at the start, only with a daughter in tow in lieu of the Guardians of the Galaxy. At least, that was until the post-credits scene moments later, which set up the arrival of Hercules.
The post-credits scene of Thor: Love & Thunder saw a humiliated Zeus in Omnipotence City rallying his son, Hercules, to make "an example" of Thor to drive humanity to renounce their worship of superheroes and reignite their fear of the gods. This confirms that Hercules will play a part in a future MCU movie - most likely Thor 5 - but how substantial his involvement will be remains to be seen. Marvel should, however, make Hercules the primary villain of Thor 5, thereby bringing Thor back to his roots in what is likely to be his swansong solo movie.

Release Date July 8, 2022 Director Taika Waititi Cast Christian Bale , Russell Crowe , Tessa Thompson , Chris Pratt2 , Natalie Portman , Karen Gillan , Chris Hemsworth Rating PG-13 Runtime 118 minutes Genres Action , Fantasy , Adventure , Sci-Fi , Superhero Thor's MCU journey began with an origin story that set him up to experience one of the most compelling character growth arcs in the entire franchise. This involved pitting him against his own brother, Loki, in the events of Thor, making his relationship with his origin story's arch-villain distinctly personal and not particularly consequential to the surrounding universe. While this would eventually lead to Loki becoming the villain of The Avengers, it was a largely self-contained story that expertly established the two most famous Asgardians before Thor became the most prolific superhero in comic book movie history.
In the following three sequels, however, Thor found himself up against cataclysmic odds and villains who intended to destroy universes, realms, and every god in existence. These stakes were even matched by Thor's other appearances in Avengers movies. Thor: Love and Thunder teased a new direction by setting Thor 5 up to center around Hercules' single-minded pursuit of Thor and Thor alone. This would call back to Thor's debut, book-ending Thor's journey and growth with two distinct personal stories but with a very different version of Thor at each end.
Why Thor 5 Lowering The Stakes Is The Best Thing For The Character Thor's most recent solo outing attempted to double down on the success of the lighthearted Thor: Ragnarok by injecting a substantial amount of humor. Unfortunately, this drew criticism for missing the mark, trivializing the movie's more emotional beats while threatening to turn the God of Thunder into a punchline protagonist. In light of this, there have been calls (including from Hemsworth himself) to shift the tone of Thor 5 - which could be Thor's final foray into the MCU. This calls for a suitable sendoff, and reducing the stakes will help to facilitate a subdued tone in a character-driven sendoff.
The God of Strength, Hercules, is no small fry - but he is a far cry from the destructive forces that Thor has recently faced. He can still offer a substantial challenge to Thor before potentially filling in for him as Thor takes his leave. The fact that Thor now has a daughter to take care of is another positive sign that Thor 5 will do away with world-ending threats in favor of a more emotional story - and it would be the perfect way to show how Thor has matured throughout his epic tenure.
