Venom 3"s Release Date Kicks Off A $1.5bn Marvel vs DC Box Office War In 2024

Venom 3's release date sparks a Marvel vs. DC box office showdown in 2024. Tom Hardy started his journey as Eddie Brock in 2018's Venom, with the actor's charismatic turn in the lead role being the first step in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Hardy would then return for a second solo movie in 2021's Venom: Let There Be Carnage, with that film beginning to explore Eddie Brock's place in the multiverse. Venom: Let There Be Carnage's post-credits scene set up Eddie and Venom to meet Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would sadly be undone not long after.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage premiered in October 2021, with Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home releasing that December. The MCU film's post-credits scene showed Eddie Brock getting his bearings in Marvel Studios' universe, only to be returned to the SSU before ever meeting an MCU hero. Now, Hardy will return for Venom 3, with the film's story being kept a secret. Variety has revealed that Venom 3 will release on October 2024. While a Spider-Man and Venom fight might not be in the film, Venom 3's release window will pit Hardy's Marvel movie against a major DC release, heating up another major superhero rivalry.
Venom 3's Release Date Kicks Off The Biggest Marvel & DC Box Office War Since 2017 Venom 3's release window sets the film for a debut in the same month as Joker: Folie à Deux — which debuts on October 4, 2024 — the sequel to the billion-dollar movie that netted Joaquin Phoenix a Best Actor Oscar win. That proximity between Marvel and DC blockbusters is not unheard of, though it is rare. The first case of such a head-to-head at the box office for the two comic book giants came in 2011, with the releases of X-Men: First Class and Green Lantern two weeks apart that June. The Marvel film would emerge victorious with $353.6 million against Green Lantern's $220 million box office total.
Then, in November 2017, Marvel and DC would come to face off at the box office again. Two major releases took the stage this time around, with Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok beating the DCEU's team-up film, Justice League. Chris Hemsworth's third solo outing as Thor brought in $854 million against Justice League's $657.9 million at the worldwide box office. In the rivalry's latest head-to-head, 2019's matchup between Captain Marvel and Shazam!, which released a month apart, Marvel Studios did not break a sweat. Brie Larson's solo film broke the billion-dollar mark, with a $1.131 billion total, while Zachary Levi's DC debut finished its run with $366 million.
