The Flash Box Office Suffers 2nd Weekend Drop That"s Nearly As Bad As Morbius

The Flash's box office has experienced a slump nearly as bad as last year's superhero flop Morbius. The DC Universe movie, which opened in theaters on June 16, follows the adventures of the titular speedster Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), returning after being officially introduced in 2017's Justice League (following a brief tease in 2016's Batman v Superman). The Flash's record-breaking box office drop continued DC's recent trend of diminishing box office returns, with a $55 million opening that was slightly above this year's disappointing Shazam! Fury of the Gods but still below last year's Black Adam, which didn't meet its break-even point in theaters.
Per Variety, the The Flash box office has taken a tremendous hit in its second weekend. It is projected to end Sunday with a 3-day total of $15.3 million, a worse-than-expected 73 percent drop that lands it at No. 3 on the weekend's chart. This gives The Flash the worst second-weekend drop in DCU history, which is nearly as brutal as the 73.8 percent drop of Morbius, which ended up grossing less than $75 million in the U.S.
Will The Flash Be Able to Turn a Profit? There are many reasons The Flash has struggled to make ends meet at the box office. One reason is that the DCU is undergoing a face-lift after the recent string of box office disappointments, potentially creating wariness committing to the existing characters in the franchise who could potentially be recast like Henry Cavill's Superman (who was promised in a Black Adam post-credits sequence before DC reversed course). There is also the matter that Miller's string of arrests and legal issues in 2022 stirred up controversy around the title long before it opened.
