“Horrifying”: Danny DeVito’s Batman Returns Method Acting Caused A Monkey To Bite His Crotch

Danny Devito's terrifying Penguin caused him to have an unfortunate encounter with a monkey on the set of Batman Returns. Tim Burton's second adventure with the Caped Crusader, Batman Returns would arrive in theaters on June 19, 1992, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as Bruce Wayne from Burton's first Batman movie in 1989. In Batman Returns, the Dark Knight faces a new villain in the form of Oswald Cobblepott a.k.a. the Penguin (Danny DeVito), while also developing a romance with Selina Kyle (Michelle Pfeifer), who is secretly the vigilante Catwoman.
Batman Returns's dark tone and violence would make it a rather controversial superhero movie upon its original release, with Danny DeVito's re-imagined Penguin particularly singled out. Though the make-up on DeVito would earn Batman Returns an Academy Award nomination, the make-up and DeVito's performance in the role would lead to complaints that he was too scary a villain for younger viewers. That sentiment would seemingly be shared by a simian member of Batman Returns's cast, with DeVito experiencing a real on-set incident with the Penguin's pet monkey.
