Scarlet Witch"s MCU Return Theory Completes Marvel Mutant Retcon After 9 Years

Summary
  • Wanda Maximoff's return to the MCU could potentially bring back her mutant status from the comics, completing Marvel's retcon of her character.
  • The MCU has hinted at Wanda being a mutant, with her powers not solely attributed to the Mind Stone. Her magical abilities could be attributed to the activation of her X-gene.
  • "Deadpool 3" could be the perfect opportunity for Wanda's return with the movie being a major multiverse film and rumors of other X-Men cameos. Making Wanda a mutant in this film could be huge for the MCU and its new mutant stories.
A Scarlet Witch return theory could finally complete Marvel's mutant retcon with Wanda Maximoff's first MCU appearance back in 2014. Having been introduced in the post-credits scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier along with Pietro Maximoff's Quicksilver, Wanda and her twin brother's on-screen origins were drastically altered compared to their backstories in the original comics. However, Wanda's powers have undergone significant evolutions in recent years, so much so that a possible return to the MCU could also bring back her mutant status.
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda and Pietro are referred to as "enhanced" individuals from Sokovia who volunteered to undergo experimentation by Hydra using the Mind Stone. While Pietro gained super-speed, Wanda's abilities were more complex including psychic energy blasts, telekinesis, telepathy through mental and emotional manipulation, and levitation. The Scarlet Witch's powers have since been fleshed out with the reveal that she's a nexus being of pure chaos magic, able to rewrite reality itself. Now, it's possible that Wanda's return following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could lead to a new retcon that effectively gives Wanda her original mutant to help explain her magical power.
