10 Marvel Movies That Get Way More Hate Than They Deserve

Several Marvel movies, including some non-MCU projects, get way more hate than they deserve. While Marvel films have almost become synonymous with the MCU, Marvel’s movie history started way before Iron Man. Considering how well-received films such as Blade, Spider-Man 2, and several MCU entries were, the Marvel brand set the bar high for theatrical films, be they from Marvel Studios or other franchises.
More than 15 years after Iron Man, the MCU has released enough movies to have its own list of films that should be more appreciated. However, some pre-MCU Marvel movies and other non-MCU Marvel projects also deserve to be reevaluated. Here are 10 Marvel movies that are not as bad as their box office performances or overall reception indicate.
10 Fantastic Four (2005) None of the Fantastic Four movies, from the canceled 1994 film to the 2015 reboot, manage to properly adapt Marvel’s first superhero family to the big screen. That said, considering the visual effects limitations of the time and what other superhero movies were doing, Fantastic Four (2005) is a solid film. It may not be a perfect Fantastic Four adaptation compared to Marvel Comics, especially regarding the scope and the scale of the Fantastic Four adventures. Here, everything is self-contained, and most of the film takes place in New York. Likewise, Fantastic Four’s Doctor Doom felt more like a “villain of the week” than the mastermind from the comics.
Still, everything else works in the context of the film, especially the Fantastic Four cast. At a time when Marvel Studios is casting a new Fantastic Four for the MCU, it is important to remember that the 2005 Fantastic Four film nailed its casting. In addition, the family dynamic involving Reed, Sue, Ben, and John matched that of the comics and delivered something that other superhero movies did not have. Other details such as the Thing’s practical costume and the portrayal of the Fantastic Four powers also worked, especially for a 2005 movie.
9 Spider-Man 3 (2007) Spider-Man 3 is widely considered the worst entry in the original Spider-Man trilogy. Likewise, the fact that Spider-Man 4 never happened caused the flawed Spider-Man 3 to be the conclusion of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, which made the film’s flaws more noticeable. Spider-Man 3 is often brought up as an example of the “third film curse,” which states that the third entry in a trilogy will likely be worse than the previous installments. Spider-Man 3 does suffer from “third movie” challenges, such as how to bring familiar elements back without rehashing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. The studio interference, namely the addition of Venom, also did not help.
