Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic helped to define the Sith in Star Wars better than anything conceived by George Lucas himself. As is commonly known pertaining to the development of the Star Wars saga, Lucas did not necessarily have everything planned out from beginning to end. This included individual elements that are now commonplace in the Star Wars galaxy such as the Sith themselves. The word Sith is not mentioned in the theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy with Lucas only conceiving of their history upon writing Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
While Lucas had always had the basic concept of the Sith in his mind as evident by the word appearing in the very rough drafts of 1977's Star Wars, it was not until the prequel era of the franchise that Star Wars' Sith Lords were further fleshed out. Since then, the ways of the Sith have been expanded upon in both Star Wars canon and Legends. One property in which this was the case was the video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic which helped to define the Sith in ways that have become prevalent in Star Wars despite not coming from the mind of Lucas himself.
