Related X-Men: The Animated Series - Why It Was Cancelled X-Men: The Animated Series ended in 1997 after a 76-episode run, but the show actually ran on for longer than originally planned. This makes the ending of the original series a lot sadder than it initially was. It was already sad that the X-Men weren't going to see Xavier anymore, but now Xavier isn't even alive out in space somewhere. Of course, this could be an intentional misdirection on Marvel's part. The X-Men '97 trailer may have intentionally left out any hope that Charles Xavier was still alive so that his eventual return would be all the more surprising and triumphant.
