Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse: Cast, Plot & Everything We Know So Far

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse updates are rolling out as it is almost time for the sequel to Into the Spider-Verse to hit theaters. Set in Sony's Spider-Verse, the movie featuring the popular Marvel character Miles Morales is set to return to the spotlight for a new animated tale. Whereas Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman directed the first installment, Joaquim Dos Santos is taking the helm of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse arrived in 2018, introducing the world to a new Spider-Man in NYC teenager Miles Morales.
Originally appearing in the Marvel Ultimates comic book line, the young teenager from Brooklyn took on the mantle of Spider-Man following Peter Parker's death. In the first movie, Miles teamed up with other Spider-heroes from alternate dimensions to stop Wilson Fisk from destroying the world. The animated feature film was met with universal acclaim, winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. The success guaranteed a sequel, and it will end up with two of them as Across the Spider-Verse brings in several Spider-Man variants, set to release in June 2023. The upcoming film and its sequel, Beyond the Spider-Verse, will see Miles interact with more variants than ever before.
The Latest Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse News The biggest recent news is that Tom Holland has been teased to play the MCU's version of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The update comes from The Hot Mic Podcast, which revealed that there was a delay on the movie because Sony wanted to secure Tom Holland to bring the MCU Spider-Man into the movie somehow. Miles Morales has dealt with at least two Peter Parkers, but this would make a clear connection between the Spider-Verse and the MCU. However, until an official announcement, this is mostly a rumor. Sony also released a second trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on April 4, 2023.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Release Date Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse updates indicate production work for the Into the Spider-Verse sequel commenced in late 2019, around the time the studio confirmed the title was greenlit. Sony revealed the release date of April 8, 2022. However, production on Across the Spider-Verse was shut down in 2020 and ended up being delayed for well over a year. The good news is that it is finished now, and the movie is coming very soon, with the sequel set to follow just one year after it. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse hits theaters on June 2, 2023, and the sequel is set to premiere on March 29, 2024.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Cast Shameik Moore is reprising his role as Miles Morales for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Moore will reunite with his former co-star Hailee Steinfeld, returning to the sequel to voice Gwen Stacy, Spider-Gwen from another dimension. Steinfeld, of course, also plays the live-action version of Kate Bishop in the MCU series Hawkeye. Jake Johnson returns as Peter B. Parker, the Spider-Man variant who helped train Miles in the first movie. Brian Tyree Henry (Jefferson Davis) and Luna Lauren Velez (Rio Morales) also return as Miles' parents.
There are some newcomers as well. Returning from the post-credit scene in the first movie, Oscar Isaac is back as Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099. Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman will make her film debut, with actor Issa Rae voicing the role. Daniel Kaluuya will join the fun as Hobart "Hobie" Brown, a.k.a. Spider-Punk. There are two new villains as well, with Jorma Taccone as Vulture and Jason Schwartzman as the Spot. Of note, Nicolas Cage will not be returning as Spider-Man Noir, though many more Spider-Man variants will be seen in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Story Details While Into the Spider-Verse featured several notable Spider-people like Peter B. Parker, Spider-Man Noir, and Spider-Woman, the sequel will look to expand on that idea ten-fold. Not only are Gwen and Peter B. Parker coming back, but Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Punk will both join the cast. From the look of the trailers, there is a danger to all the multiverse versions of the Spider-heroes, and it looks like they have to face Miles Morales when the heroes disagree on what they need to do to stop the villains. The trailers show Gwen going to Miles, possibly to warn him, but Spider-Man 2099 is no-nonsense in saving the world.
However, the movie also features two villains, the Vulture and the Spot. Vulture became a household name after Spider-Man: Homecoming, but Spot is making his big-screen debut. In Marvel Comics, he is a man who has the power to open up portals that can lead anywhere, and this includes the multiverse. The Spot likely opens up portals into the multiverse, perhaps starting to unstring the Web of Life. Even so, the trailers seem to suggest that Spider-Man 2099 and his Spider-Society will be out to get Miles, so the true villain of Across the Spider-Verse is yet to reveal themselves.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Trailer The first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released at 2022's CinemaCon, featuring Miles Morales going about his life with his parents after the events of Into the Spider-Verse. However, Spider-Gwen soon shows up and convinces him to follow her. This leads to a huge moment of multiverse jumping and the arrival of faces like Spider-Man 2099. The trailer makes it appear like the Spider-heroes are fighting Miles, and Gwen even said she thought they were supposed to be "the good guys." It's clear there will be conflict, but despite the trailer, Miles will almost surely team up with these heroes to save the universe.
A second trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released on April 4, 2023. This trailer gives a more in-depth look into the Spider-Man variants' community, known as the Spider-Society, and run by Spider-Man 2099. Oscar Isaac's Miguel O'Hara seems to have some sort of vendetta against Miles Morales, apparently sending his Spider-Forces after the young hero as he is chased throughout the multiverse. This trailer features some fantastic cameos from Spider-Man variants, many of which will excite nostalgic fans of the web-slinger while also providing a great deal of comic relief.
How Many Spider-Man Variants Are In Across The Spider-Verse? From the sound of it, two of the Spider-Man variants won't be back for this movie. Trailers for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse indicate that Nic Cage's Spider-Noir and Spider-Ham won't be showing up. However, with Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Punk, possibly Tom Holland's MCU Spider-Man, there will be more than enough. There also looks to be countless others, even if just in glancing cameos. With Miles, Gwen, and Peter B. Parker, that makes five main Spider-Man variants alone. However, Jessica Drew will make her movie debut as Spider-Woman, the oldest known variant in Marvel Comics after the main Spider-Man.
However, there are so many more. In the trailers, particularly the second trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the Spider-Society is shown to contain hundreds of different versions of Spider-Man. A black costume Spider-Man appears, reminiscent of the Venom-controlled Spider-Man. On top of this, a Tron-style Spider-Man, both of the PlayStation Spider-Man heroes, an armored Spider-Man, the steampunk-style Lady Spider, the Mangaverse Spider-Man, Spider-Cop, and Widow the Spider-Horse are only a few of the variants set to appear in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Peter and Mary Jane's daughter from a future timeline, Annie May, is coming as Spiderling. Even the Bombastic Bag-Man, Werewolf Spider-Man, Future Foundation Spider-Man, and Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider show up in the trailers, and more will certainly pop up throughout the theatrical release. Marvel Comics has an ongoing series featuring Spider-Man with his multiverse variants, so there is a wealth of material to pull from when adapting these comics into the animated film series. With Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, the sky is the limit.
