Although Sam Raimi has no plans for a Spider-Man 4 yet, he has noted necessary character and story details for Tobey Maguire’s return as Spider-Man – and the potential introduction of another spider hero – following his Marvel Cinematic debut. The MCU’s Phase 4 saw both Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi return to Marvel adaptations, with the former reprising his Spider-Man role in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the latter directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Unsurprisingly, this has renewed interest among viewers in seeing both Maguire and Raimi return once more for a Spider-Man 4.
The Raimi Spider-Man franchise nearly continued in the early 2010s with Spider-Man 4, which would have featured The Vulture as its primary antagonist. Sam Raimi stepped down from the director’s role before the film was finished, leading Sony to reboot the franchise with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield. If Sam Raimi were to make a Spider-Man 4 now, it would likely be a significantly different film from what he initially planned, with his comments and No Way Home’s story hinting at potential storylines, including perhaps a new spider-themed hero.
Spider-Man 4 nearly included a montage of Spider-Man fighting supervillains (including Bruce Campbell as Mysterio) - a decision that could have potentially referenced elements of the Raimi Spider-Man franchise’s spinoff materials, which brought a multitude of Marvel superheroes and supervillains into the Raimi universe.
Related Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man Universe Secretly Has Way More Superheroes & Villains Than You Realize Canonical Raimi Spider-Man spinoff materials reveal that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man shares a universe with many Marvel superheroes and supervillains. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 Requirement Teases What Its Plot Would Look Like Close While discussing rumors of potentially directing more MCU films with The Wrap, Sam Raimi discussed necessary plot and character details, if he were to make a Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire. Raimi noted:
I think if we were to make a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ film, we’d probably have to figure out the journey that Tobey Maguire his character would be going on, and what obstacles he had to overcome to achieve that growth personally... And I hope that the villain would be chosen based on a representation of that obstacle.
At Tobey Maguire’s request, No Way Home revealed little about the Raimi universe’s Spider-Man since the events of Spider-Man 3. One of the few concrete details is that he and Mary Jane Watson are still together, despite the difficulties that come with his double life as Spider-Man. With this in mind, one of the best possible storylines for a Spider-Man 4 would be an adaptation of the early story arcs from Tom DeFalco’s Spider-Girl comics. This would continue to develop Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson and allow for a heavy-hitting villain to represent their latest challenge.
Introducing Spider-Girl To Spider-Man 4 Puts Peter's Core Principle To The Ultimate Test Close In the MC2 universe – a branching timeline from the mainstream Marvel Comics continuity – Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s daughter, May “Mayday” Parker, develops the same spider-like superpowers as her father when she is a teenager. Peter and Mary Jane (with the former having retired from his superhero career) forbid her from following in Peter’s footsteps, creating a fascinating dilemma. Peter Parker’s core principle is “with great power, there must also come great responsibility,” yet he and Mary Jane knowingly defy this principle for their daughter’s safety. This leads Mayday to fight crime – at times secretly – in defiance.
Using this storyline as a basis for Spider-Man 4 allows the stories of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson to progress and for them to face a new sort of challenge to coincide with their new chapter. Peter and Mary Jane’s romance has always been the core of the Raimi Spider-Man franchise, and having the two become parents of a child destined to succeed Spider-Man would present a new and fitting conundrum for them, especially with an antagonist who reminds them of Spider-Man’s deadliest foes.
A fitting antagonist for Spider-Man 4 would be Hobgoblin, Carolyn Trainer, or Carnage. Each one is an offshoot of sorts of Spider-Man’s most dangerous foes – Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Venom. Peter and MJ would be reliving the most perilous moments from their previous adventures, only now their daughter is potentially threatened too.
Spider-Man 3 teased the Hobgoblin by having a Raimi universe version of his mask show up in Harry Osborn's laboratory as an easter egg.
Even With Spider-Girl, Spider-Man 4 Would Still Be Peter Parker's Movie Close The MC2’s Spider-Girl comics feature Mayday as the protagonist, but Spider-Man 4 would, obviously, still be Peter Parker’s movie. Spider-Man would be fighting a battle on multiple fronts, facing off against one of his deadliest enemies yet, while also questioning his most important principle as his daughter faces a life-threatening and mentally taxing potential future that Peter would be all too familiar with. By using MC2’s Spider-Girl as its source material, Spider-Man 4 would continue Peter Parker and Mary Jane’s stories while presenting them with new challenges and setting up a new hero for Sam Raimi’s universe.
Spider-Man 4 Spider-Man 4 is the canceled sequel to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3. Despite his plans to develop another movie starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the director chose to scrap the project early in development, which allowed Sony to move forward with the Andrew Garfield-led reboot The Amazing Spider-Man. Ideas for the canceled fourth installment included John Malkovich's Vulture, Anne Hathaway's Felicia Hardy, and Bruce Campbell's Mysterio.
