Natasha Lyonne joins the cast of the MCU's Fantastic Four, and her casting can redeem her previous role in a divisive Marvel film. The cast of 2025's Fantastic Four continues to grow. Lyonne joins a cast that recently added Ralph Ineson, Paul Walter Hauser, and John Malkovich. Besides Ineson, who was cast as Galactus, and the main Fantastic Four, all the other cast members are portraying unknown roles. No worries though, because Hauser, Malkovich, and Lyonne are all talented actors, and Marvel knows how to utilize the actors it hires.
However, audiences might forget that this isn't Lyonne's first Marvel outing. She had a small role in 2004's Blade: Trinity, the final film in the Blade trilogy starring Wesley Snipes as the legendary vampire hunter. While Blade: Trinity wasn't a complete box office flop, critics and audiences thought it was a disaster, and there are a few reasons for that. Fortunately, the MCU has a better track record, so Lyonne has a chance at redemption in The Fantastic Four.

Natasha Lyonne's MCU Fantastic Four Role Can Balance Out Blade: Trinity

In Blade: Trinity, Lyonne plays Sommerfield, a researcher for the Nightstalkers who develops the Daystar virus that can kill vampires by targeting their DNA. The plan is to inject Drake, the patriarch of the vampire race, with the virus, thereby killing all other vampires. Unfortunately, she gets killed by Drake before her plan comes to fruition. Fortunately, Blade stabs Drake with a Daystar arrow, killing him and all the other vampires. Lyonne doesn't have a major role in this film, but it's a forgettable one, especially in a movie that failed in many ways.
Lyonne has a chance to have a more memorable superhero role in The Fantastic Four. It's unclear who she will play, but there are several options. A popular theory is that she's playing Alicia Masters, a blind artist who develops a romantic relationship with Ben Grimm. Kerry Washington previously played her in Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer. Another popular choice is H.E.R.B.I.E., the Fantastic Four's robot featured in the MCU poster, but this could also be an option for Hauser's character.
Why Blade: Trinity Was Such A Controversial Ending To The Marvel Movie Trilogy Close Blade: Trinity went through many production issues that led to its poor critical reception. Director David S. Goyer had a different idea for the film's original story, where Blade would question his humanity while fighting vampires. However, New Line Cinema wanted the film to have a lighter tone, so they forced Goyer to change the script. This led to Blade: Trinity being more of a standard 2000s superhero film, filled with quippy one-liners and a lousy Dracula plot.
The negative consequences of the script changes weren't just the film's narrative, as Wesley Snipes' dissatisfaction with the story reportedly caused chaos on set. According to a 2012 AV Club interview with Patton Oswalt, Snipes "wouldn't come out of his trailer, and he would smoke weed all day." He also only communicated through Post-it notes. His lack of enthusiasm also led to the infamous CGI eyes scene, as he refused to open his eyes during the morgue scene, allegedly out of spite for Goyer. Hopefully, Lyonne doesn't have similar problems on the set of Fantastic Four.
