The Suicide Squad Replacement Confirmed: DC Universe Explains What Happened To Task Force X

Summary
  • DC Studios has confirmed that the Suicide Squad has been dissolved, allowing the Creature Commandos to be formed instead.
  • Amanda Waller will form the Creature Commandos, a.k.a. Task Force X, in the DCU's upcoming animated series.
  • The whereabouts of the surviving Suicide Squad members are unclear, but it's possible they could return alongside Peacemaker and Weasel.
DC Studios has finally confirmed the fate of the Suicide Squad, as the first teaser trailer for Creature Commandos has introduced the team's replacement for the DC Universe. James Gunn's first experience with DC saw him reinvent the titular antihero team in 2021's The Suicide Squad. Since then, the filmmaker has gone on to become co-CEO of DC Studios, leading the creative side of the studio that will soon reboot the DCEU into the DC Universe, which kicks off with the release of Creature Commandos in December.
While James Gunn is now leading the charge at DC Studios, no future projects for the Suicide Squad have been announced for the new franchise. However, during the Jim Lee and Friends panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, DC Studios may have confirmed the fate of the Suicide Squad team, as a trailer for the DCU's first project, the animated Creature Commandos series, was finally released. It seems as though the DCU's Creature Commandos team will be replacing the Suicide Squad.

The DC Universe Confirms Congress Ended The Suicide Squad Creature Commandos' first trailer provided much-wanted insight into the upcoming series, which is set to release on Max later in the year. The Creature Commandos are little-known, but it seems they'll be taking over completely from the Suicide Squad, particularly being led by Amanda Waller and Rick Flag Sr., while the series will also have an adult tone. In the opening moments of the trailer, Waller, Viola Davis reprising her DCEU role, and Flag, voiced by Frank Grillo, confirms that Congress has dissolved Task Force X, a.k.a. the Suicide Squad.
Amanda Waller: General Flag, this is Belle Reve. For over 50 years, only those at the uppermost levels are aware of its existence.
Rick Flag Sr.: I thought Congress put a stop to all Task Force X activities.
Amanda Waller: Congress said you can't use human prisoners... These assholes aren't human.
Congress perhaps would have made this decision after Amanda Waller's daughter, Danielle Brooks' Leota, exposed all her mother's clandestine operations during Peacemaker season 1. Not being able to use human prisoners as the foundation of Task Force X has forced Waller to be more creative in her team-building, which creates the perfect opportunity for the more monstrous and unusual Creature Commandos team to make its debut. A little-known team from DC Comics, the Creature Commandos will have a huge role in the DCU.
The Suicide Squad's Replacement Explained: What Is Task Force M? Close The DCU's first project will introduce the Suicide Squad's replacement, led by Rick Flag Sr., the father of Joel Kinnaman's The Suicide Squad hero, and working under the supervision of Amanda Waller. This version of the team consists of several monsters, transformed humans, creatures and robots, allowing Waller to side-step Congress' new no-humans rule. The Creature Commandos first appeared in DC Comics back in 1980's Weird War Tales #93, but it seems the DCU's iteration will be vastly different.

Originally in DC Comics, the Creature Commandos came together as part of Project M, which created creatures to aid in the battle during World War II. They fought Nazis, took on dinosaurs, and traveled to space, before being reinvented in 2011's New 52 reboot. This new version of the team worked as field agents for the covert organization SHADE, and shares more similarities with the monstrous group seen in the DCU. This team also included Eric Frankenstein, the Bride, and the mutated Nina Mazursky, just as the animated Creature Commandos, known as Task Force M, will.
What Happened To The Surviving Members Of The Suicide Squad The fact that Congress has dissolved teams such as Task Force X and Team Peacemaker raises questions about the future of these characters in the DCU. John Cena's Christopher Smith is returning in Peacemaker season 2, though it seems he won't be working for Amanda Waller and ARGUS in the upcoming series. Peacemaker is only one surviving member of James Gunn's previous Suicide Squad, but is currently the only one confirmed to be returning. The whereabouts of the other Task Force X members are unknown.

In The Suicide Squad, Bloodsport led Harley Quinn, Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher 2 and King Shark to face Starro, and while Polka-Dot Man was killed by the giant alien creature, the other members of the team survived. After defeating Starro, Bloodsport blackmailed Amanda Waller to let the surviving team members go free, as well as dropping charges against his daughter. They were airlifted off Corto Maltese, and haven't been seen since. Weasel also survived the dramatic opening of the movie, allowing him to return in Creature Commandos as part of a new team.
