The trailers for the MCU movie have emphasized the presence of the TVA, the time-monitoring organization from Loki that protects the sacred timeline. The TVA recruits Deadpool for a mission that is still a secret, but it will supposedly save Deadpool's world and the Marvel multiverse. The organization also brought in Wolverine, but it's unknown how Hugh Jackman's yellow spandex version of the character will factor into the plot.
Still, many unknowns exist about why the TVA chose Deadpool as Marvel's savior in the Deadpool & Wolverine story. It could be due to the Merc With The Mouth's impeccable ability to break the fourth wall, or it could be connected to events from his past adventures in Deadpool and Deadpool 2. The TVA could be looking for another character with a history with Deadpool, according to a theory that could bring back a fan-favorite character.

The TVA Is Searching For Cable After The Events Of Deadpool 2 Close In Deadpool 2, Josh Brolin's Cable travels back in time to kill Russell before he becomes a pyromaniac who kills his family. After teaming up with Domino and Deadpool, Cable saves Russell, but still prevents his dystopian future from happening. However, Deadpool gets access to Cable's time-traveling device and uses it to save Vanessa, kill his variant from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and kill Ryan Reynolds before he can star in DC's Green Lantern.
According to a Reddit theory shared by mechafogzilla, Cable's time travel device can affect the main timeline without breaking into the branched timelines that make up Marvel's multiverse. Avengers: Endgame established time travel in the MCU, and it's drastically different from the Back to the Future logic that so many films adopt. What happens in the past doesn't affect the future. It creates an alternate timeline that stems from that one event. If Cable and Deadpool's actions in Deadpool 2 only affect the main timeline, it could explain why the TVA may need Deadpool's help to find cable.
Cable's Time Travel Device Could Be Crucial For The TVA

The TVA is always looking for ways to protect the sacred timeline. If Cable's device makes it easier for the organization to keep the timeline in order, they would want to find it and use it to their advantage. It could be stronger than their TemPads and the TVA wouldn't have to purge every single variant that goes rogue. Their search for Cable would also align with another theory that the TVA is the secret villain of the film, which could make sense as Deadpool and Wolverine are seen fighting several TVA soldiers.
The theory is that Matthew Macfadyen's Paradox leads a rogue sector of the TVA who still wants to protect the sacred timeline after the Loki season 2 ending switched their goal to protecting the multiverse. Finding Cable's device would allow them to go back and fix many of the events that led to the sacred timeline being destroyed without creating new time branches. They could also purge any new universes created by the sacred timeline collapsing. Many possibilities arise from having Cable's time-traveling device, and it could be a significant MacGuffin in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine Wouldn't Need Cable For A Cable Storyline Close Deadpool & Wolverine will have many cameos by characters from the MCU and Fox's Marvel universe. Cable could be one of them, but Brolin hasn't confirmed it. In an interview with The Playlist, Brolin said he wanted to be in the film as he loves Cable, but he apparently will not appear.

I so wanted to be in that movie. [Marvel] is a more complex labyrinth than ‘Outer Range’ will ever be, my friend. And I will never know where that went or what that is or what I’m involved with or what I’m not involved with —the MCU being involved now. Cable was a lot of fun. I really liked doing that role.

If Brolin's Cable isn't in the film, the theory still works without him. As far as the audience knows, Deadpool hasn't given Cable his time-traveling device back yet, so the TVA could use Deadpool to find out where it is. That wouldn't require Cable to show up in the movie, but it would still make Cable an important part of the storyline. It would also be an excellent way for the previous Deadpool films to tie into Deadpool & Wolverine before the character joins the MCU.
