Cyclops leads the X-Men once again in X-Men ’97, demonstrating a new use of his mutant superpower that makes him far more interesting than his film counterpart. Continuing from where the classic X-Men Animated Series left off, X-Men ’97 is a comic-accurate and crowd-pleasing revival of one of Marvel’s most beloved TV shows, and much of the praise X-Men ’97 has been receiving has centered on its portrayal of Cyclops. While Cyclops has a poor reputation, as far as his personality and the seeming overspecialization of his powers go, X-Men ’97’s first episodes provide strong counterarguments to these views.
Cyclops, also known as Scott Summers, is one of the first members of the X-Men, having been part of the initial lineup in Marvel’s Earth-616 comics and the X-Men Animated Series. Cyclops’s mutation gives him the power to fire concussive blasts from his eyes, though the beams are technically always being projected. To keep the blasts under control, Cyclops wears a distinctive visor (and glasses as Scott Summers) with ruby quartz lenses. Operating as the field leader of the X-Men, Cyclops is one of the team’s most formidable members, and his depiction in X-Men ’97 showcases his best qualities.

Cyclops' New Power In X-Men '97 Explained Close In the pilot episode of X-Men ’97, “To Me, My X-Men,” Cyclops takes most of the team to the Sahara Desert to confront Bolivar Trask. Falling out of the Blackbird without a parachute, Cyclops fires a continuous beam of his optic energy at the ground, slowing his fall and allowing him to land safely. This visually astounding use of Cyclops’s powers has not been seen before on film or television, and it shows how useful his optic blasts are in scenarios other than combat. The pilot episode’s opening action sequence also had Cyclops use his powers creatively.
Related What Time X-Men '97 Episodes Release On Disney Plus X-Men '97 episodes will be streaming on Disney Plus throughout the Spring, with release times for each episode having been confirmed by Marvel. When rescuing Roberto da Costa (the future Sunspot) from members of the Friends of Humanity terrorist group, Cyclops incapacitates his opponents with his optic blasts, but he also uses them to dodge their attacks. Firing powerful blasts at the walls and floor, Cyclops propels himself around the room while using lower-power blasts and fisticuffs. Fascinatingly, these uses of Cyclops’s powers have appeared before, both in Marvel’s X-Men comics and one of their video game adaptations.
Cyclops Has Used His New Superpower Before Close Throughout Cyclops’s X-Men comic history, he has used controlled bursts of his optic blasts to send himself through the air. As with many mutants, Cyclops has a degree of immunity from his own powers. Since Cyclops’s optic blasts are concussive energy, his mutant powers presumably affect his neck muscles as well since he controls the direction of his head when using his power. In addition to using the blasts to transport himself and others, Cyclops has also used his blasts to cut or vaporize materials (or opponents) and can even make the beams ricochet.

Cyclops manages to control the power of his optic blasts not only by likely having additional protective powers but also by his years of practice with the power. Moreover, Cyclops’s gloves and visor have buttons and switches that allow him to better control his powers.

Cyclops Is Already Cooler In X-Men '97 Than The Fox Movies Close Cyclops was introduced to many viewers by the Bryan Singer X-Men movies. Although the first film was groundbreaking (helping to establish the modern superhero blockbuster, along with Blade and Spider-Man) and its sequel, X2: X-Men United, was well-received, the films were hardly authentic depictions of the X-Men comic source material. One of the film franchise’s many problems was its failure to properly balance its ensemble cast, with Wolverine, Professor X, and Magneto receiving far more focus than anyone else. Cyclops was left a rather bland and overspecialized character, enforcing the common view that he is a “boring” character.
Of course, the X-Men comics themselves, the X-Men Animated Series, and now X-Men ’97 disprove this. In his first two appearances of X-Men ’97, Cyclops demonstrates wit and humor, in addition to solid leadership skills in battle. Cyclops’s powers are far more useful than simply blasting his opponents, as shown multiple times in X-Men ’97 as well.
