Marvel Studios' Wong actor has recently teased the return of the Sorcerer Supreme to the MCU, and there are several brilliant storylines that could be told when Benedict Wong reprises the fan-favorite role. Benedict Wong debuted as Wong in 2016's Doctor Strange, initially depicted as the new librarian in Kamar-Taj, but who later became a close friend and sidekick to Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange. Following Strange's demise during Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame's five-year-long Blip, Wong became the Sorcerer Supreme, allowing him to become one of the most powerful sorcerers and one of the most consistent characters in the MCU.
Wong made several cameo appearances throughout the MCU's Phase 4, popping up in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. This makes Wong the most consistent character in the MCU's Multiverse Saga, and has seen him become a fan-favorite hero, so many are wondering when he'll be returning. Benedict Wong recently spoke to Comicbook.com, and stated that, even though it's been a while since Wong has appeared, "something's looming." Wong's return to the MCU could adapt any number of brilliant Marvel Comics stories.
I can't really say. It's been awhile. Something's looming. Something's looming.

In Marvel Comics, the Midnight Sons are a team of supernatural superheroes who first came together in 1992's Ghost Rider (Vol. 3) #31 to battle Lilith, Mother of All Demons, but Wong also led a Midnight Sons team of his own. During 2018's Damnation event, Wong assembled the Midnight Sons to battle Mephisto, so this could be the perfect future for Wong in the MCU.
When Could Wong's Midnight Sons Debut In The MCU? Marvel Studios could develop a dedicated Midnight Sons project. This could see Wong's Sorcerer Supreme bring together the likes of Moon Knight, Blade, Man-Thing, Elsa Bloodstone, Iron Fist and more, as the MCU's Midnight Sons. Moon Knight season 2, Doctor Strange 3, or Phase 6's Blade would also be great opportunities for Wong to build his supernatural team.

Strange freezes Wong in time and thrusts his astral form into Wong's mind, reliving his most recent memories in hopes of finding out what happened, and to find a cure. He eventually does, of course, so this could make a dark side-story for Wong's MCU return.
When Could Wong Become A Vampire In The MCU? There's been no word on Dracula's MCU debut, but vampires will be introduced en masse in Phase 6's Blade reboot. Mahershala Ali is set to debut as Eric Brooks' Blade in a project that could establish Dracula's history in the MCU. As Blade, Doctor Strange and Wong play a part in the MCU's supernatural storylines, Strange and Wong could easily appear in 2025's Blade, and this could mark Wong's transformation into a villain.
8 Wong Could Establish The Memorial Metaphysical Institute In The MCU Doctor Strange Founded The Memorial Metaphysical Institute In Marvel Comics Close While battling the Old Ones in 1987's Strange Tales (Vol. 2) #3, Doctor Strange protected Wong by casting a spell to fake his own death. This spell transformed the Bleecker Street Sanctum Sanctorum into the Stephen Strange Memorial Metaphysical Institute, where Wong and his then-love-interest Sara Wolfe worked as administrators. It's not clear exactly what the Memorial Metaphysical Institute did, but this could be an interesting rest-stop for some of the MCU's heroes.
When Could Wong Establish The Memorial Metaphysical Institute In The MCU? The MCU's Doctor Strange has already undergone a similar spell to the one that established the Memorial Metaphysical Institute, as he made everyone forget Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. This could be a great opportunity to establish a similar setting, with the Institute perhaps forming in Doctor Strange 3 or even the MCU's highly-anticipated upcoming sequel, Spider-Man 4. This could provide assistance to sorcerers and heroes in the MCU, which Wong has already been displaying.
7 Sara Wolfe May Be Reintroduced To The MCU As Wong’s Love Interest Sara Wolfe Has Already Made Her MCU Debut Close Sara Wolfe made her Marvel Comics debut in 1979's Doctor Strange (Vol. 2) #38, introduced as Doctor Strange's secretary and a love-interest for Wong. Even though Wolfe and Wong's romantic connection was intense, Wong had been promised to another since childhood, so he couldn't continue his relationship with Wolfe. The MCU's Wong hasn't had any love-interests introduced yet, so bringing Sara Wolfe into his life could add interesting new layers to his character.
When Could Sara Wolfe Return In The MCU? An adaptation of Sara Wolfe has actually already appeared in the MCU, as she is the Master of the Mystic Arts who sacrifices herself by destroying the Darkhold in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Despite her death in Multiverse of Madness, Sheila Atim's Sara Wolfe could return, perhaps in Doctor Strange 3. Alternately, a more comic-accurate depiction of the character could be introduced, as Sara Wolfe is of Native American, Cheyenne heritage in Marvel Comics.
Sara Wolfe was portrayed by Sheila Atim in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, despite Wolfe being of Native American descent in Marvel Comics.
6 Imei Chang’s MCU Debut Could Drive Wong & Doctor Strange Apart Imei Chang Was Wong's Long-Running Love-Interest In Marvel Comics Close If Marvel Studios decides not to revive Sara Wolfe to introduce a love-interest for Wong in the MCU, perhaps Imei Chang could debut instead. Imei was the woman whom Wong was promised to, making his relationship with Wolfe difficult. Imei Chang was soon killed by the demon Sister Nil, and impersonated by the demon Xaos in an attempt to get to Doctor Strange. Strange neglected to help Wong during this situation, causing friction between the pair for the first time, which could be pivotal to their MCU futures.
When Could Imei Chang Debut In The MCU? Imei Chang hasn't yet been seen in the MCU, so it's possible that Marvel Studios could still introduce her as a long-running love-interest to Wong. This could spare her being killed off too soon, and create the opportunity for Doctor Strange to finally become the Sorcerer Supreme. This evolution would be a great story to explore in sequels beyond Doctor Strange 3.
5 Doctor Strange Could Find A Cure For Wong’s Cancer Wong Developed Cancer Sometime Before Marvel Comics' Civil War Event Close During 2007's Marvel Comics limited series Doctor Strange: The Oath, it was revealed that Wong has been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. This was an emotional storyline that saw Doctor Strange and Wong come even closer, as the former set out to find an elixir that would save his friend's life. Strange battled the demon-god Otkid in order to retrieve the elixir and save Wong's life, proving the lengths he'd go to in order to help his closest friend.
When Could Wong's Cancer Be Introduced In The MCU? Cancer is a subject that Marvel Studios hasn't shied away from, as the likes of Maria Rambeau and Jane Foster have both been inflicted with the condition. Unfortunately, neither have survived their battles, but Wong could be the one to break this trend. Wong's potential cancer diagnosis in the MCU would be hugely emotional, particularly for Strange, and there's no telling what dangerous acts Strange would commit to save Wong.
4 Wong & Doctor Strange May Battle Each Other In The Multiverse Saga Wong & Doctor Strange Have Had Tensions In The MCU Close After Doctor Strange used unorthodox methods to save Sanctum Sanctorum librarian Zelma Stanton in 2017's Doctor Strange (Vol. 4) #20, Wong decided to leave the world of magic behind and forge his own path in life. This decision caused a huge rift between Wong and Strange, which would be a brilliant next step in the pair's friendship in the MCU. In recent years, Benedict Cumberbatch's Strange has been making questionable decisions, so Wong could be on the verge of leaving his side.
When Could Wong & Doctor Strange Battle Each Other In The MCU? Doctor Strange's recent actions in the MCU may have set him up as something of a villain. He went against Wong's wishes in Spider-Man: No Way Home and almost ruined the multiverse. Strange then dabbled with the Darkhold, possessed his variant's corpse and caused an incursion in Multiverse of Madness. These actions are enough reason for Wong to engage Strange in battle, perhaps ostracizing Strange before Avengers 5.
3 Wong Could Train New Sorcerers At The Strange Academy Doctor Strange Formed The Strange Academy In 2020 Close Established in 2020's Strange Academy #1, the titular Strange Academy is a school in Marvel Comics for budding sorcerers and those with magical abilities. This series introduced several young magic users into the Marvel Universe, and saw Doctor Strange assume a pivotal role in their education. However, as the MCU's Sorcerer Supreme, it would make sense for Wong to assume this role, particularly since Strange is currently off on a journey across the multiverse.
When Could Wong Build The Strange Academy In The MCU? Marvel Studios' Strange Academy has already been rumored to be adapted, potentially in Doctor Strange 3 or in a Disney+ series, introducing new young sorcerers. This would be a fantastic way to expand the MCU's mystical narratives while playing off of Multiverse of Madness' ending, which saw America Chavez training in the Mystic Arts. Any number of powerful young heroes from Marvel Comics could join her, setting up a bright future for magic in the MCU.

The Avengers haven't been seen since 2019's Endgame, but several teams have been hinted at replacing them prior to 2026's Avengers 5. Wong has already built connections with the likes of Shang-Chi, Katy, the Abomination and She-Hulk, perhaps laying the foundations for Wong's powerful new Avengers.
When Could Wong Form A New Avengers Team In The MCU? Avengers 5 in the MCU's Phase 6 is expected to establish an official new team of Avengers, but Wong's secondary Avengers team could also form in this project. Following the events of Marvel Comics' Civil War, Wong worked alongside the New Avengers for some time, so there's precedence for him to form this MCU team. Only time will tell what the full roster would be, however.
1 Wong Is Likely To Return Alongside Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange Is All But Confirmed To Be Returning To The MCU Close Although there has been no official confirmation from Marvel Studios, Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong have been all but confirmed to be returning to the MCU. Doctor Strange has been set up as a crucial figure in the MCU's Multiverse Saga, even though he hasn't appeared for a while. Strange knows more about the multiverse and incursions than anyone else, and his story will surely continue in a sequel to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will likely include Wong.
When Could Wong & Doctor Strange Return To The MCU? Marvel Studios' hasn't confirmed Doctor Strange 3, but both Cumberbatch and Wong have previously teased that there are more upcoming adventures for the pair of MCU magicians. Speculation suggests that Doctor Strange 3 could release prior to Avengers 5 and Secret Wars, perhaps adapting Marvel Comics' Time Runs Out. This would make Wong and Strange's next MCU adventure one of the most important fixtures in the MCU's history.
