I Can"t Believe The MCU Used The 1 Villain Origin Story I Was Convinced They’d Never Show

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Summary
  • The surprising inclusion of Cassandra Nova's comic origin story in the MCU's Phase 5 was unexpected but fitting for Deadpool & Wolverine.
  • Cassandra Nova's intense early life tale helps explain her relationship with Xavier and adds depth to her character in the movie.
  • Deadpool & Wolverine's wacky plot and violent nature make it the ideal setting for Cassandra Nova's complex narrative to unfold.
While she's one of my favorite Marvel villains, I never thought I'd be able to see Cassandra Nova's origin story come to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - because, quite simply, it seemed like the kind of thing the franchise would steer very far clear of for more than one reason. The MCU timeline has effectively adapted its fair share of hero and villain origin stories to the big and small screens across this time, and there's no doubt many more on the way with upcoming Marvel movies and shows.
That said, some MCU adaptations are further from the original source material than others, especially since it, for the most part, tries to keep things appropriate for a broad audience, meaning some comic moments haven't seen the light of day in movies or shows. However, this made the reveal that the MCU's Phase 5 had adapted Cassandra Nova's bizarre comic origins all the more unexpected, since it previously would have seemed to me to fall entirely into the category of things the franchise would always avoid adapting.

2 I Always Thought Cassandra Nova’s Origin Story Would Be Too Wild For The MCU Cassandra Nova's Comic Story Is Pretty Intense Cassandra Nova makes her cinematic debut in Deadpool & Wolverine, complete with suitably disturbing uses of her power and a matching characterization - even killing off a major Deadpool & Wolverine cameo within minutes of appearing. While it's understandable to focus more on Cassandra using her abilities to put her hands inside people's skulls, an especially interesting line of dialogue wherein she mentions she tried to strangle Charles Xavier in the womb before being sent to the Void felt even more surprising to me, as it confirmed that this Cassandra has her comic origin storyline.
In the comics, Cassandra and Charles' rivalry begins early, by literally having the siblings' first battle be in the womb. Becoming aware of Cassandra's innate evil in utero, Charles is shown blasting his unborn sister with his psychic powers, in a move that appears to have killed her off, but actually merely delayed the inevitable of her rise to villainy.
It's not the most outrageous X-Men storyline by a very considerable margin, but it is still certainly a complicated topic for adaptations to address, making the Deadpool & Wolverine reference all the more special. This is partially because it involves quite extreme violence towards babies, and partially because it's strange and surreal enough that it stands out as a jarring thing to bring into a franchise.
Why The MCU Was Right To Use Cassandra Nova’s Comic Origin Story The MCU Benefits From Keeping Cassandra Nova's Story The Same In Deadpool & Wolverine Though Cassandra's early life story is definitely one of the more intense and not child-friendly comic tales, it makes a lot of sense to keep it for the MCU's iteration of Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine. Firstly, it's a clear way to explain why Cassandra didn't grow up alongside Xavier despite the pair being related - and a way to justify why Xavier himself may not fully be aware of her existence in the movie's story. Similarly, it helps drive home why Nova is the way she is by at least alluding to her decidedly unusual childhood and personal circumstances.
Deadpool & Wolverine Made Using Cassandra Nova’s Origin Story Way Easier Deadpool & Wolverine Is The Ideal Movie To Include Cassandra & Her Arc Close Deadpool & Wolverine is perhaps the best MCU movie to put Cassandra Nova and her somewhat bizarre origin story in, as when compared to the extensive graphic violence and general off-the-walls happenings that are rife throughout the film, Nova isn't exactly out of place, even with the womb war a canon event in her life. Had this fragment of her narrative landed awkwardly for the story, the multiversal nature of its plot also means this wouldn't have been a complicated issue, since the film doesn't introduce the MCU's main version of the character, meaning her overall lore isn't as crucial.
Much in the same way Deadpool & Wolverine balances the MCU movie's wacky plot with the human and often tragic stories of its two titular heroes, the focus placed on Cassandra Nova is more about her complicated feelings towards Xavier, which humanizes her in a way that helps ground the weirder parts of the character. With this approach, Nova can be both a complex figure, and an unhinged supervillain who would happily end the world on a whim or remove a person's skin for fun - and frankly, I think that's a pretty effective way to handle her as an antagonist.
