With the release of
The Penguin season 1, viewers might be wondering what is known about a potential second season of the DC spin-off. The Penguin is a DC Elseworlds series that focuses on the iconic eponymous Batman villain"s rise to power in Gotham"s sprawling underworld. After debuting in 2022"s The Batman, Colin Farrell"s Oz Cobb takes center stage in this spin-off created to further flesh out the lore of Matt Reeves" acclaimed Batman trilogy.
The Penguin retains the dark themes established in The Batman, delivering a particularly bleak take on one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in Batman"s rogues" gallery. Colin Farrell"s Oz Cobb is a stark departure from the most recent live-action cinematic adaptation of Oswald Cobblepot in 1992"s Batman Returns, portraying him instead as a shrewd and seedy mob boss. Short of Oz Cobb"s death in The Batman - Part II, his crucial role in Gotham means that a second season is always possible - so here"s what we know.
The Penguin Season 2 Has Not Been Confirmed Colin Farrell Has Also Expressed His Doubts About Returning To The Character Close The Penguin season 2 has not yet been confirmed. This is becoming a typical fare for Matt Reeves" Batman productions, as confirmation for a sequel to The Batman did not come until several weeks after the first of the trilogy was released. With that in mind,
confirmation of season 2 of The Penguin is unlikely for some time after the final episode of The Penguin season 1 airs on November 10, 2024.
The Penguin will be available to stream on Max and will release episodes weekly.
The success of The Penguin will also influence whether The Batman spin-off will return for a second season. Given it is a limited series of just eight episodes, the prognosis is not particularly promising, as it is likely intended to bolster the mainline movies.
Oz Cobb"s personal story, meanwhile, will continue within The Batman - Part II, which Farrell is confirmed to be reprising his role for.
Farrell"s recent comments also lessen the likelihood of a second season of The Penguin. When asked by TotalFilm about whether he believes season 2 is possible, Farrell replied:
I don’t know, man. Don"t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f-----g wanted it to be finished. I tried to remind them that I had "grumpy gratitude." I was still grateful, and still honored – I grew up watching Burgess Meredith [who played the role in the "60s TV series], and then Danny DeVito [in Tim Burton"s 1992 film Batman Returns] was my Penguin – so being a part of the lineage of that storytelling, I really did feel privileged. But by the end of it…It"s not like I didn"t know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and s--t, but… if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did and what Mike [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer] did and put them all together, it was a really powerful experience.
This "powerful experience" is likely referencing how labor-intensive the role became after donning such a significant amount of prosthetics on such a regular basis. As yet,
no other cast members nor the show"s creators have commented on the possibility of a second season for The Penguin.
The Penguin Season 2 Cast: Who Could Return? Returning Characters Depend On Whom Survives Season 1 Close It remains mostly unclear which characters will survive the entirety of The Penguin season 1 to return for a second season. Oz Cobb would presumably reprise his starring role, though the violence inherent within The Batman franchise and Oz"s thirst for absolute power endangers just about every character in Penguin"s periphery. Despite the series being set in Gotham, Batman does not make an appearance. Should The Penguin prove successful, however, then
Batman may appear in some capacity in season 2 alongside other, more prominent characters in the mainline movie trilogy.

Several actors who embody unconfirmed roles in The Penguin may also carry over into a second season. This would be particularly likely for any prominent characters and villains from Batman"s comic book mythos that debut in The Penguin. Should Oz Cobb achieve his goals and take his place at the head of Gotham"s underworld, this may put him at odds instead with more heroic figures within Gotham, including Batman himself.
The Penguin Season 2 Story: What It Could Be About The Penguin Will Likely Tell An Original Story
Custom image by Yailin Chacon The Penguin season 2 would likely depict its titular villain at the height of his power. Given the creative license that Matt Reeves" and other writers have demonstrated with their interpretation of the Batman mythos,
it is difficult to draw from specific DC Comics storylines that the next season might look to adapt. With Penguin set to reappear in The Batman - Part II, however, there is a chance that Penguin and Batman"s long history in the aftermath of that movie might even see them cooperating out of convenience against a greater threat.
