Marvel Studios'
Scarlet Witch and
Jean Grey may battle in the future of the MCU, and as two of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, their fight would certainly be a sight to behold. The Scarlet Witch and Jean Grey have never had the chance to meet in live-action, as Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff has inhabited the MCU, while Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner's versions of Jean Grey were confined to Fox's X-Men Universe. However, Disney's 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox made their meeting in the MCU much more likely, so both may have the chance to show off their incredible abilities, incomparable to other MCU heroes.
Jean Grey was the first of this pair to appear in Marvel Comics, debuting in 1963's The X-Men #1, while Wanda Maximoff joined later in 1964's The X-Men #4. For several decades, both were depicted as mutants, but the Scarlet Witch's backstory was retconned in 2015, making her abilities the direct result of experimentation by the High Evolutionary, instead, though she was also born as a witch with natural powers.
The Scarlet Witch and Jean Grey have very different origins in Marvel Comics, and in their live-action iterations, but their powers are actually remarkably similar, making them two of the most formidable and notable female heroes in the Marvel Universe.
Related The MCU Already Nailed The Story X-Men Movies Have Failed Twice The X-Men franchise has already failed twice to tell the story Marvel Studios has told quite well with Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch. Scarlet Witch's Chaos Magic Vs. Jean Grey's Mutation Close In the MCU, Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff was introduced with a range of powerful abilities connected to her harnessing of "chaos magic". While Wanda was born as a witch with some innate abilities, these powers were enhanced after she was exposed to the Mind Stone while subjecting herself to HYDRA experimentation.
The Scarlet Witch's chaos magic gifts her powers including telekinesis, psychic energy manipulation, levitation, force-field projection and telepathy, which allows her to manipulate the minds of other individuals. She has also displayed a mastery of typical witchcraft, including spellcasting, teleportation and transmutation, though her most impressive gift is that of altering reality itself.
Portrayed by both Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner, Jean Grey in Fox's X-Men Universe demonstrated similar abilities to the Scarlet Witch. Jean Grey was born a mutant, and her powers emerged as a child, inadvertently causing her family car to crash.
Jean's primary ability is telekinesis, allowing her to move objects with her mind, but she also uses this to fly, fire energy blasts and manipulate objects on a molecular level. Jean Grey is also capable of telepathy, illusion projection, precognition and memory manipulation, and is regarded as the only Class 5 mutant in Fox's X-Men Universe, making her extremely powerful even before she bonded with the cosmic Phoenix Force.
Scarlet Witch Has Better Control Over Her Abilities
While both Wanda Maximoff and Jean Grey have a huge amount of power, the MCU's Scarlet Witch has a much better handle and understanding of her gifts than Jean Grey in Fox's X-Men Universe. Of course, it has taken several years for Wanda to fully understand her true potential, and audiences have watched her abilities and confidence grow exponentially since her 2014 debut. Her powers took a huge leap forward during Avengers: Infinity War, where Wanda displayed the strength to destroy an Infinity Stone, and
Phase 4's WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw her finally embrace her full power, though not for completely heroic gains.
Jean Grey's situation is a little less straight-forward, as her powers were limited from a young age thanks to mental blocks put in place by Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X. Jean Grey is perhaps the most powerful mutant in Fox's X-Men Universe, but never got the chance to show off the full extent of her abilities, as Xavier had dulled-down her gifts to protect herself and those around her. This means that
Jean Grey has little understanding of what she's actually capable of, and has never had the chance to fully embrace these abilities, so the Scarlet Witch would be much more adaptable in a high-pressure battle situation between them.
Jean Grey Has Been Trained By Professor X
Even though the Scarlet Witch may have a clearer understanding of the extent of her powers, Wanda Maximoff has never received any formal training in the MCU, and has only been able to organically hone her abilities over several years. This means that Wanda is often sloppy when using her gifts, and sometimes makes major mistakes that could even cost lives, such as her actions in Lagos during 2016's Captain America: Civil War. With nobody else in the MCU who harbors gifts similar to her, it's surely difficult to imagine anyone training Wanda in how to use her gifts, but this is where Fox's Jean Grey has the upper hand.
In Fox's X-Men Universe, every member of the X-Men team has received direct training from Professor X in how to harness and hone their unique abilities, including Jean Grey.
Despite the limitations in her mind, Jean Grey is still able to tap into a huge amount of power, and she is able to control these abilities because of assistance given to her from Xavier. Jean's work with the X-Men in both timelines has given her the opportunity to put this to the test, and continued training means that she is always learning from her mistakes and working out how to do better, which is very dissimilar to the Scarlet Witch.
Scarlet Witch Is Capable Of Altering Reality
Marvel Studios' Phase 4 finally demonstrated the Scarlet Witch's most impressive power, as 2021's WandaVision saw Wanda Maximoff alter reality itself. During WandaVision, Wanda's collective grief over losing her parents, her brother and Vision culminated in her creating her own world in the town of Westview, New Jersey.
Inside the Westview Hex, the rules of physics bent to Wanda's own design. She was able to transform every aspect of her world to fit the differing time periods of her sitcom-style world, she manipulated the minds of every Westview resident to force them to portray characters inside the Hex, and she was able to expand the Hex at will.
This was, by far, the most expansive demonstration of the Scarlet Witch's chaos magic abilities, as she was even able to create a version of her lost love, Vision, and create two children, Billy and Tommy Maximoff, who also expressed superpowers. This occurred before Wanda fell into possession of the Darkhold, which allowed her to traverse alternate realities in the MCU's multiverse, expanding her range of abilities further.
This kind of reality warping is something that Fox's Jean Grey was never capable of pulling off, perhaps suggesting that the Scarlet Witch could simply alter the world at its most basic level to trap Jean Grey in her own makeshift world.
The Darkhold is the MCU's Book of the Damned. It's continued use corrupts its reader, forcing them to take extreme and dark actions to complete their missions. The Darkhold has been shown to corrupt the Scarlet Witch and several variants of Doctor Strange in the MCU.
The Phoenix Force Enhances Jean Grey Massively
While Jean Grey never showed off natural reality warping abilities in Fox's X-Men Universe, her bonding with the Phoenix Force enhanced her mutant powers beyond belief. In Fox's original X-Men timeline, Famke Janssen's Jean Grey became the Dark Phoenix in X-Men: The Last Stand. During the 2006 project, Jean Grey's telekinetic and telepathic powers were dramatically increased, making her capable of disintegrating Professor X with little effort and playing with the rules of gravity. However,
The Last Stand relegated the adaptation of Marvel Comics' Dark Phoenix Saga to a side-plot, but 2019's X-Men: Dark Phoenix put this storyline front-and-center.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix arguably adapted The Dark Phoenix Saga much more faithfully, as, despite its flaws, Sophie Turner's Jean Grey bonded with the cosmic Phoenix Force rather than turning to the dark side without otherworldly intervention. The Phoenix Force immensely amplified Jean's mutant abilities, allowing her to overpower the likes of Professor X and Magneto, as well as take down the extraterrestrial D'Bari without hesitation. The Phoenix Force gave her the power to manipulate cosmic forces, adapt to extreme environments and regenerate herself after injury.
Both these adaptations have failed to show Jean Grey's Phoenix abilities to their full potential, but Marvel Studios could change this.
Scarlet Witch Vs. Jean Grey: Who Would Win? Close Even though it might be quite some time before Marvel Studios takes on The Dark Phoenix Saga, there have been calls for a true adaptation of the Marvel Comics storyline to be adapted in the ever-expanding MCU. X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Dark Phoenix both failed to show the full extent of Jean Grey's Phoenix powers, but her debut and appropriate set-up in the MCU could finally deliver what viewers have been hoping for.
Empowered by the Phoenix Force in the MCU, Jean Grey's mutant powers would perhaps equal the chaos magic abilities of the Scarlet Witch, making a battle between the two an epic cinematic spectacle.
Jean Grey is an Omega level mutant, meaning there is simply no limit to what she can accomplish.
Without the Phoenix Force, it's likely that Wanda Maximoff would be able to best Jean Grey in battle, as she has powers far outweighing the X-Men member, especially with Professor X's limitations in Jean Grey's mind. However, if the Scarlet Witch and Jean Grey engage in battle with both at full power, it's more possible to imagine the latter having the upper hand. With the Phoenix Force, Jean Grey is an Omega level mutant, meaning there is simply no limit to what she can accomplish, and
though the Scarlet Witch would certainly put up a strong, mind-bending fight, Jean Grey would likely take the victory during this huge battle.
Will The Scarlet Witch & Jean Grey Ever Battle In The MCU?
After the events of 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch is seemingly dead in the MCU, making her future in the franchise unclear, though there is speculation she will be returning. Conversely, Marvel Studios has begun development on its X-Men reboot, meaning it may not be too much longer before Jean Grey is introduced to the MCU. Should the
Scarlet Witch return in the MCU's future, it's entirely possible that her connection to mutants in Marvel Comics would constitute a battle between Olsen's witch and the MCU's
Jean Grey, though it will surely be quite some time before this highly-anticipated battle becomes a reality.
