Summary
- The Jedi Temple had clans similar to Hogwarts houses, where young Jedi were sorted into different groups based on animals mascots, fostering trust and kinship.
- Sith, the darker counterpart of the Jedi, would be the equivalent of Slytherin in the Harry Potter universe, using the Force for personal gain rather than serving it.
- The concept of houses or clans in the Jedi Temple is intriguing and raises questions about dormitories, traits associated, and the process of selection and sorting, which could be explored in future Star Wars stories.
During the prequel era of
Star Wars and earlier, the Jedi Temple had clans much like the houses at Hogwarts. Star Wars has pulled from other fantasy stories since the beginning, as new worlds have likewise drawn from Star Wars. The Harry Potter universe has become a recent source of inspiration, with the Jedi Order putting a spin on the Sorting Hat process that saw young wizards join their houses.
By the time of the prequel trilogy, the Jedi Temple is where Jedi from all over the galaxy are brought as infants to begin their training in the ways of the Force. Jedi called "Seekers" would search the galaxy for Force-sensitive children that they could teach raise to become Jedi. These younglings would be generally trained by the likes of the ancient Professor Huyang and Master Yoda before becoming Padawans to a specific Jedi Knight or Master. But before becoming Padawans, Jedi younglings were sorted into clans not dissimilar to the process in the Harry Potter series.

First appearing in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, the Jedi Initiate clans are very similar to houses in a boarding school. They're for dormitories, training groups, classes, and much more. The audio drama Dooku: Jedi Lost by author Cavan Scott deals with the life and training of Count Dooku, and thus features these clans. Dooku was part of Hawk-Bat Clan, as all of them were represented by an animal mascot, much like the Hogwarts houses. The Hawk-Bat was a creature native to Coruscant and is described in Dooku: Jedi Lost as a group "...that is supposed to foster an atmosphere of trust and kinship."
A Jedi Initiate clan also appears rather prominently in several episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These were the episodes that followed a group of younglings being led by Ahsoka and Huyang to find their kyber crystals for constructing lightsabers. They've been featured in several books and comics since, mainly the "Students of the Force" arc of the Yoda comic series by Jody Houser and the novel Brotherhood by Mike Chen.
