Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 3 Death Just Gave This DC Character A Genuinely Heartbreaking Death And It Was Truly Perfect For The Show

Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3 provided a truly heartbreaking death for one key DC character - but pulled it off in the most fitting way for their legacy. As the latest in a considerable line of live-action Superman shows, Superman & Lois has had a lot to live up to in terms of legacy, both in terms of its on-screen predecessors, and the comics that inspired their creation. With this backdrop, it does feel truly fitting the final season of the series adapts The Death of Superman, given the truly iconic nature of the comic story and its relatively limited number of on-screen renditions.
However, Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3 also manages to bring another tragic death to the forefront of its story shortly after showing the death of the Man of Steel - and make it manage to hit home on an emotional level despite viewers still recovering from Superman"s passing so soon before. Given the major implications this death has for the show and its final episodes, though, it certainly looks set to pay off for the series, even if it comes out of left-field for audiences not expecting another major part of the Superman & Lois season 4 cast right after the demise of the iconic DC hero.
General Lane's Death In Superman & Lois Season 4 Was A Fitting Sendoff For The Character Lois Lane's Father Made A Heroic Sacrifice That Looks To Bring Back The Man Of Steel Close Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3 brought the death of General Lane in the wake of Superman"s own, with the character"s demise being closely tied to the death - and seeming rebirth - of the Man of Steel. Sam Lane dies in order to protect the rest of the Department of Defense, Smallville, his own family, and Lex Luthor"s daughter. Luthor manages to get on the phone to Sam after blackmailing one of the other DOD soldiers at the base, and uses this call to threaten the General in order to try and get information about Elizabeth Luthor and where she"s currently hiding.
Sam refuses to reveal this information to Luthor, and when the villain states he will send Doomsday over unless Lane complies, Lois" father doubles down, committing to protecting Elizabeth from her own dad. In the chaos of these threats, the DOD soldier holding the phone shoots Sam, who appears to quickly realize the shot is fatal - and that this means he can inject himself with the vial of Superman"s blood he"d been saving for use on a donor heart that could then be used to try and bring the Man of Steel back.
Sam then walks outside to be killed by Doomsday, aware his sacrifice will not only protect the other humans around him, but also may work to revive his son-in-law and allow Lois to reunite with her husband. A series of key flashbacks take place during the episode to underline how fitting it is for General Lane to go out this way, showing how Sam went from an emotionally reserved and somewhat detached father who tried to stop Superman from seeing his daughter, to a man who would lay down his life in order to reunite the pair, and who makes sure to record a final message to tell Lois how much he adores her.
General Lane's Death Means Superman & Lois Has A Major Death Even After Superman's Resurrection Sam Lane's Death May Be The Biggest Permanent Death In Superman & Lois Season 4 Superman & Lois season 4 killing off Superman in its premiere was shocking, but also a different kind of death, since it seems this demise isn"t permanent. The show appears to be adapting The Death Of Superman storyline, and since this storyline notably features his revival, it"s always seemed like it would be in the cards, even before the show raised the idea that General Lane"s heart could bring Clark back from the dead.
As such, the series killing General Lane off is more shocking in a lot of ways, since his death appears to be a decidedly permanent one. The Kent family"s story has hinged around all of its members, and losing one of them for good adds a definite layer of tragedy to the final chapter of the series - though ensuring it"s a noble sacrifice that plays a seemingly crucial role in the plot helps to make it not feel like a waste of the character, and instead like the weight of his story choices can continue to echo throughout the ending of the show.
Superman & Lois Using General Lane's Death To Bring Back Superman Is A Perfect Comic Tweak Superman & Lois' Season 4 Story Appears To Have Tweaked Other Core Elements Of The Comics Story In The Death Of Superman, Clark"s father, Jonathan Kent, goes on to have a notable role in the story. Following the death of his son and the turmoil this drags him through, Jonathan has a heart attack, and during the coma this puts him in, he sees a vision of Superman, who he urges to return to the land of the living before Clark comes back.
Superman & Lois adapts its own version of this twice in season 4, with the way Lane"s death is used to revive Superman looking similar, and Clark"s son named Jonathan gaining powers because of his grief also seeming to have parallels to the original source material. Given the different turns the show has taken from the comic, though, where it intends to take the story is still hard to predict. Hopefully, General Lane"s heartbreaking death will continue to be shown as the important plot point it deserves to be as the final season continues.
