Superman & Lois Season 4 Finally Gave Me The Storyline I’d Given Up On Ever Happening After 3 Years

Superman & Lois season 4 finally gave me the superpower storyline I had truly given up hope of every appearing in the DC show. Superman & Lois" final season has built on a lot of fan hopes about the series and what could come from its last chapter. Superman"s show death was as metaphorically heartbreaking as it was literally following Doomsday stealing his heart to prevent him from coming back, and the performances from all of the Superman & Lois season 4 cast have ensured every moment is at its most dramatic and engaging.
However, there was one part of the proverbial Superman & Lois wishlist that I simply never expected to see happen, after several years of the show seemingly underlining that it wouldn"t ever be a part of its story despite the immense narrative potential it could hold. After several years of this being the case, though, the live-action Superman show turned the tables in the best possible way, creating quite possibly the most unexpected plot twist in the entire course of the show - and quite possibly one of the best, too.
Superman & Lois Season 4 Finally Gave Jonathan Powers Jonathan Kent Just Got A Major Power Upgrade With Superman"s death having only just recently occurred - and the story being locked into exploring how and whether he could come back - I don"t think I was alone in not expecting another huge development for the Kent family so soon after. However, Superman & Lois season 4, episode 3 brings not one of these, but two, with General Sam Lane"s death, and with Jonathan discovering his dormant powers after having an emotional breakdown about Clark"s passing and Lex Luthor crushing Superman"s heart.
Superman & Lois seemed to play up the idea that each of the titular pair"s children mirrored their parents in opposite ways - with Jordan having Superman"s powers but personality-wise often being closer to Lois, and Jonathan having no powers but more of his father"s personality. This appeared to be cemented with the story that saw Jonathan join Smallville"s firefighters, showing how he was capable of being a hero without having superhuman abilities, and giving him a way to embrace his sense of justice and desire to do good in a different fashion.
As such, it will be interesting to see how Jonathan"s powers emerging affects his arc and the show"s overall narrative, especially since his skillset appears to be the same as Jordan"s and their father"s - though Jonathan notably appears to have taken to his powers quicker than Jordan did already. With some of the biggest fights in the show seemingly on the horizon for the series before it ends, Jordan"s newfound powers are sure to get fully shown off in the near future, letting him enter the fray in a way he"s never really been able to in the series before.
I Never Thought I'd Get To See Jonathan Get Powers After Season 2's Fake Out Superman & Lois' Season 2 Story Seemed To Suggest Jonathan Kent Wasn't Ever Getting Powers Close The topic of whether Jonathan Kent would ever get any powers has long been one of the most discussed topics regarding Superman & Lois. Superman"s mention that he gained his powers at a different time to Jordan certainly suggested it was possible for Jonathan to simply be a late bloomer when it came to the powers his Kryptonian heritage could bestow upon him.
However, Superman & Lois season 2"s Jonathan story initially to me seemed like the show politely telling viewers that the character would never get powers. In season 2, Jonathan takes the X-Kryptonite drug being used by other Smallville inhabitants to get powers in order to succeed as an athlete. While the X-Kryptonite gave Jonathan powers mimicking Jordan"s natural ones, they also made him aggressive and struggle to focus, leading to his decision to stop using them - with no powers remaining after he stopped with the questionable substance.
Since this story let many moments that would have otherwise needed Jonathan to show natural powers happen - with Jordan getting excited that his brother has gained his own powers, and with Jonathan trying to adjust to things like supervision, for example - it seemed like the plot negated the need for Superman & Lois to actually give Jonathan powers. Similarly, with Jonathan"s season 2 story seemingly being made to show the character he doesn"t need powers, the prosect of them appearing after this point seemed decidedly unlikely.
Superman & Lois' Finale Season Is The Perfect Place For Jonathan To Get Powers Having Superman's Other Son Get His Powers Amps Up The Hype For The Finale Even Further Close In the span of three episodes, Superman & Lois season 4 has colossally changed the Kent family and the show itself in permanent ways multiple times. As a character who can otherwise end up in the background a little despite his personal story being interesting in its own right, Jonathan Kent getting powers at this point makes a lot of sense - especially since I think the many seasons of him being without powers of his own will have made this plot twist more than a little surprising to those who"ve watched his story from the start.
On a similar note, Superman & Lois is also gearing up to have the final fights of the show, and the fact these can now contain both of Superman"s sons makes things all the more poignant. It also raises the prospect of Superman & Lois ending with Superman being succeeded as a superhero by both of his children, which would work phenomenally well given the overall focus of the show has always been on the whole family, and on Clark and Lois trying to instill their own values in their kids.
With seven episodes left until Superman & Lois concludes, there"s still a lot of time to explore what Jonathan getting powers means for the show, and for his own personal arc and its impending conclusion. Based on the care that"s currently gone into making the final season as emotional as it is epic, it"s likely this plot - and the many others being balanced alongside it - will get some more due time in the spotlight before the iconic DC series closes out for good.
