Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine! There was no shortage of hilarious moments in the MCU’s latest blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine, as even some of the most badass parts of the film had bits of humor woven into them - including one in particular: Hulk vs Wolverine. As Deadpool traverses the multiverse searching for the perfect Wolverine to partner up with, one of the Logans he finds is in the middle of a battle with the Hulk, and Deadpool’s inclusion makes that moment utterly hilarious. And now, one piece of fanart makes that already comical moment even funnier.
In a post on Instagram by MAD contributor/freelance illustrator and art director Kerry Callen (handle: kerrycallen), the artist shared a piece of artwork that parodies one of the most iconic moments in Wolverine and Hulk’s shared Marvel Comics history. The moment in question was originally depicted on the cover of The Incredible Hulk #340, which features the Hulk appearing in the reflection of Wolverine’s claws right before a fight. The fanart, however, is a bit different.
Rather than the Hulk appearing in the reflection of Wolverine’s claws, he appears in the reflection of a particularly shining toaster. Wolverine is still screaming his battle cry, as is the Hulk. The only difference is that Wolverine is fighting the Hulk with a toaster for some reason, and it seems neither of them think that’s weird at all. The absurdity of this piece is hysterical, and the artwork itself is outstanding, making this piece an absolute treat to behold. And the most interesting part? This artwork is somehow funnier than the gag in Deadpool & Wolverine, even without Deadpool!
Why THIS Hulk vs Wolverine Moment is Worthy of so Many Parodies/References The Incredible Hulk #340 by Peter David and Todd MacFarlane Close In such a short period of time, The Incredible Hulk #340 got two parodies/references: Deadpool & Wolverine and this piece of artwork by Kerry Callen. That alone might make some fans question: why? Why is this Hulk vs Wolverine comic so iconic? It’s not the first one, or even the most impactful to either of their storylines. So, why has it received so much praise, especially lately?
While there isn’t one definitive reason why this image of Hulk vs Wolverine stands above the rest, there is an obvious one: it just looks so badass. Wolverine screaming a battle cry with his claws drawn, the Hulk screaming angrily in return while charging him, his face shown in the reflection of Logan’s adamantium claws - what’s not to like about this image? It’s simply awesome, and perfectly captures the energy of a ‘Hulk vs Wolverine’ matchup like no other piece of artwork ever has, and the many parodies/references it receives proves it.
‘Hulk vs Wolverine (& Toaster)’ Isn’t Kerry Callen’s First Comic Book Parody Piece As previously mentioned, Kerry Callen is an accomplished professional artist with a history of MAD contributions. MAD is famously known for parodying basically everything, and that includes comic books, and Callen is responsible for creating a number of those parodies. The artist’s Instagram is filled with examples, both in the form of MAD collabs and personal pieces/commissions. In other words, fans won’t find a better artist to create a hilarious parody of such an iconic image.
