Summary
- Quicksilver's MCU speed is just the tip of the iceberg - his ability to think at incredible speeds remains unexplored until now.
- Gamora's MCU combat skills show only a fraction of her true abilities, including Wolverine-like healing factor and enhanced strength.
- The Grandmaster may be a comedic character, but his power levels are no joke - one of the Marvel Universe's most powerful beings.
Across its many stories, the
Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured multiple characters who were actually more powerful than they seemed. Since the very beginning of the MCU, the franchise has sought to adapt some of Marvel Comics’ most exciting heroes and villains. Naturally, many of these characters boast impressive abilities, employing them in the perpetual struggle between good and evil that’s characteristic of the genre. As the franchise has grown, the movies of the MCU have introduced an increasing number of these characters, with ever-raising stakes providing a growing need for the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.
Interestingly, not all MCU characters are shown to be as powerful as their nature or comic book history would suggest. On many occasions, the power level of heroes or villains in played down or overlooked, despite them possessing truly staggering abilities. Sometimes this is a matter of balancing heroes and villains in a particular story in the MCU's movie timeline, and on other occasions it’s down to the character in question playing a supporting role and not being examined as closely. Either way, each of these characters is actually far more powerful than they seem in the movies.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Director Joss Whedon
Release Date May 1, 2015
Studio(s) Marvel Studios
Budget 365 million USD Quicksilver’s time as an Avengers was cut tragically short, with his MCU death seeming cheap and unearned. As such, the franchise never explored the extent of his powers outside of his super speed. Quicksilver boasts many abilities in the comics, and one in particular should also logically exist in the MCU:
he is able to think at incredible speeds. This gives Quicksilver an eidetic memory as well as the ability to process information much faster than others, resulting in incredibly fast reflexes. This ability isn’t explicitly mentioned in the MCU, but it’s all but certain that Pietro possessed it.
9 Gamora’s MCU Abilities Aren’t Confirmed, But She’s Very Powerful There's A Good Reason Gamora Is Considered So Dangerous Close Shortly after her introduction to the MCU, Gamora is described as one of the most dangerous individuals in the galaxy. Her status as a daughter of Thanos saw her trained in various forms of combat, although her movie appearances never fully addressed any latent abilities she also possesses. In the comics,
Gamora has a healing factor similar to Wolverine’s, as well as increased strength and speed. Though the MCU has never directly confirmed these abilities, her combat prowess in the franchise makes them seem likely tools in Gamora’s arsenal.
8 Ronan The Accuser Is More Formidable Than His MCU Defeats Suggest The Kree Warlord Is More Fearful Than He Seems
Guardians of the Galaxy PG-13
Director James Gunn
Release Date July 30, 2014
Runtime 122 Mins Ronan the Accuser acts as the main antagonist of Guardians of the Galaxy, and the film briefly explains how feared he is across the galaxy. As he’s defeated by the Guardians in the same movie, the MCU never had a true chance to explore how powerful Ronan truly was. His appearance in Captain Marvel, set prior to his death, also saw him defeated with relative ease. These defeats don’t do justice to the true power of Ronan:
he was able to wield the Power Stone without being consumed, and he instilled fear across the galaxy for many years.
7 Korg’s Comedic Nature Conceals His True Power Level Korg Possesses Incredible Strength
Another example of an MCU character whose power is overlooked due to the way he’s handled in the franchise is Korg. Thor’s stony friend first appears in Thor: Ragnarok, offering up a good deal of comic relief. His comedic nature conceals the fact that
Korg is actually quite powerful, possessing enhanced strength and durability. Though these abilities are shown in the MCU across Korg’s many appearances, they take a back seat to some of his sillier moments, making it all too easy to overlook that he’s actually an impressively powerful being.
6 The Collector Is Virtually Immortal & Has Genius-Level Intellect Taneeler Tivan Is Ancient & Powerful
First appearing in one of the MCU’s post-credits scenes, the Collector is an important supporting figure in the Marvel Universe. Benicio Del Toro’s Taneleer Tivan is an eccentric character, but his depiction in the movies doesn’t do justice to his actual power level. As one of the universe’s most ancient beings,
the Collector is nigh-immortal and also possesses a genius-level intellect that rivals any other MCU character. However, as he’s only really used as a tertiary character, his true power levels have yet to be properly explored.
5 Odin Once Conquered All Of The Nine Realms Odin's Most Powerful Moments Happened Off-Screen Close Asgard’s king, the All-Father Odin, is undoubtedly one of the most impressive figures in the MCU. However, his role within the franchise is not as a hero or a villain, and he’s rarely shown using any particular abilities. As such, it’s easy to overlook how powerful Odin is. It’s mentioned that Odin once conquered the Nine Realms, which is in itself a rather staggering feat. The power required to do so is remarkable, and it’s only due to the fact that it happens off-screen that makes him seem less powerful than he is.
4 Malekith Seems Less Powerful Because He Was Killed Too Quickly The Dark World Failed To Show How Dangerous Its Villain Was
Thor: The Dark World introduced Malekith, a Dark Elf villain who has been featured many times in the comics. His only appearance in the MCU failed to properly establish just how powerful Malekith was, although it did offer up a number of subtle indications.
Malekith’s ability to wield an Infinity Stone is itself a noteworthy display of power, as is the way in which he attacks and provokes Asgard. The Dark World made him a far more generic villain than necessary, ignoring his incredible skills in magic that he possesses in Marvel comics.
3 Hulk’s True Strength Has Yet To Be Explored The Hulk's Strength Has Few Limits Close There are multiple Hulk stories the MCU needs to finish, including exploring his true power level within the franchise. In the comics, Hulk’s potential strength is practically limitless, and his powers effectively make him immortal. Though this has been teased in the MCU – in moments such as Hulk’s snap to reverse Thanos’ –
the franchise has simply never truly delved into an examination of Hulk’s real power. As Hulk has often been used as a punchline of sorts, it’s easy to overlook just how powerful a being he truly is.
2 The Grandmaster Possesses A Huge List Of Abilities The Grandmaster Is One Of The Marvel Universe's Most Powerful Figures
Thor: Ragnarok PG-13
Director Taika Waititi
Release Date November 3, 2017
Studio(s) Marvel , Disney
Budget $180 million
Runtime 2h 10m Thor: Ragnarok is one of the MCU’s most comedic offerings, and Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster is a major contributor. The tyrannical ruler of Sakaar is shown to be incredibly eccentric and a little sadistic, but he’s also a remarkably powerful being. Ragnarok doesn’t explicitly showcase his powers, but
the fear he instills in Sakaar’s populace hints at the extent of his abilities. In the comics, the Grandmaster possesses a range of powers which, combined with his status as one of the universe’s most ancient beings, makes him far more powerful than he seems.
1 Ultron’s Nature Makes Him Much More Dangerous Than He Seems Age Of Ultron Wasn't Necessarily The End For The Adaptable Villain
Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced one of the Avengers’ most formidable foes, but his true power level hasn’t been done justice by his lack of any follow-up stories in the MCU. Age of Ultron explains how adaptable Ultron is and that he’s essentially capable of surviving using any computer in the world. Ultron’s ability to return with a new and more dangerous plan is what makes him such a powerful and dangerous villain, and though the
Marvel Cinematic Universe established him as such, it never followed up on the extent of his power.
