Summary

  • Speculation swirls around Kang actor Jonathan Majors' future in the MCU, leading to theories ranging from Kang's reset of the universe to his victory over the heroes.
  • Some fans believe that Avengers 5 will kickstart a new storyline by adapting Avengers: Siege or establishing the Young Avengers, while rejecting ideas like Kang being a sympathetic villain or Ironheart as a Kang variant.
Little is known about Avengers 5, meaning that fans have come in full-force with a slew of theories, ranging from believable to nonsensical. The fifth major crossover installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers 5, previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, is slated to release in May of 2026. While this premiere is still quite some time away, frighteningly little is known about the next important chapter in the MCU's lifespan, meaning the fandom has run rampant with speculation.
Much of the guesswork revolves around Kang actor Jonathan Majors' firing from the MCU, putting the fate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe up in the air. Whether the series decides to simply re-cast Kang or pivot the story into a new villain entirely is anyone's guess. Even if Kang does remain, the multiversal nature of his threat has a dizzying number of possible implications for the franchise moving forward, which several fan theories have attempted to predict to varying degrees of plausibility.

12 Makes Sense: Kang Will Reset The MCU Now Is As Good A Time As Any To Start From Scratch Close With stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans having gracefully phased themselves out of the picture, it's only a matter of time before the remaining familiar faces fade away.
Ever since the success of Avengers: Endgame, it's safe to say the MCU has struggled to find its footing. With stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans having gracefully phased themselves out of the picture, it's only a matter of time before the remaining familiar faces fade away. The multiversal threat of Kang could be the perfect excuse to start anew, re-casting the entire universe with Fox properties like the X-Men and Fantastic Four in tow.
There are a number of ways this theory could manifest. A re-set of the sacred timeline could be the only sacrifice play possible to keep Kang from ruling over all of existence, similar to Doctor Strange's gambit in Avengers: Endgame. It's worth mentioning that a reboot could be just what the MCU needs to refresh the waning interest in the franchise, with an Avengers-level threat like Kang being the perfect excuse to do so.
11 Doesn't Make Sense: Kang Will Win Would Re-tread Old Ground Too Obviously Close Another tricky presence to account for that makes predicting the future of the MCU difficult is the sixth Avengers movie, titled Avengers: Secret Wars at the time of writing. This project could adapt the legendary Secret Wars crossover event from Marvel comics. The issue is the matter of how a Kang-centered Avengers 5, or any plot, for that matter, will lead into this sudden departure in the story.
One theory posits that Avengers 5 will end with Kang being victorious over the heroes, orchestrating the Secret Wars arc with the survivors via his newfound power. This would be a poor decision for several reasons. Heavily altering the original story in such a way would be a tough pill to swallow, and the obvious re-tread of the events of Avengers: Infinity War will do little to earn back fans' waning good faith in the aging MCU.
10 Makes Sense: Avengers 5 Will Be A Massive Siege Another Crossover Offers The Perfect Kang Replacement Close In the end, it may be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's best interest to nix the Kang angle entirely, instead focusing on a new storyline for Avengers 5. The problem is in finding a worthy crossover event that the established rising action of Phases 4 and 5 can lead into. Enter Avengers: Siege, a massive comic event that sets the stage perfectly for a climactic fifth Avengers film.
The Avengers: Siege storyline depicts a world in which the many extraterrestrials living on Earth are routed by the world's governments, taking refuge in Wakanda. Soon after, the advanced nation comes under threat of war for harboring literal aliens. This could fit nicely into the current events of the MCU, with the Asgardians and Skrulls already on Earth. Namor could even join in on Wakanda's fight against the world, giving him his chance for a war on the surface.
9 Doesn't Make Sense: Kang Will Be Revealed To Have Manipulated Wanda The MCU Should Be Wary Of Retcons Close Retconning previous events has been a historically poorly-received gamble for the MCU to make. The reveal of War Machine being a Skrull as far back as the events of Captain America: Civil War in Secret Invasion was met with a negative response that likely taught the MCU a lesson. With this in mind, it's incredibly unlikely that one theory regarding a certain Scarlet Witch will come to fruition.
Redditor u/MitskiFan13 seeks to rectify Wand Maximoff's character assassination in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness by making it the work of Kang's influence. Somehow, across space and time, Kang was able to manipulate Wanda into seeking out her children in other realities, possibly fraying the barriers between dimensions and allowing the many variants of Kang to worm their way through. Not only would this diminish the end of Wanda's arc, but the corrupting influence of the darkhold would be retroactively erased from MCU canon.
8 Makes Sense: Avengers 5 Will Establish The Young Avengers The Formation Of A Fresh New Team Has Been Long Overdue Close It's no secret that Marvel has been slowly sowing the seeds for a young Avengers team. Between Riri Williams, Kate Bishop, Ms. Marvel, and Hulk's son Skaar, the MCU young Avengers roster is all but decided already. Avengers 5 could be the perfect time for Marvel to finally put the next generation of heroes they've slowly been amassing into the spotlight.
There are several ways the universe could go about making this change. Killing off several of the major remaining Avengers, like Doctor Strange or Thor, could be a great way to both sell the threat of a villain and make room for the newest hero team in the MCU. It could even be Kang behind these actions that set the stage for the college-age heroes, making this theory feasible wether the character will be present in Avengers 5 or not.
7 Doesn't Make Sense: Ironheart Is A Kang Variant A Baffling Theory With Little Evidence Close Other than being a possible young Avenger, Riri Williams has been the subject of a strange theory personally linking her to the potential events of Avengers 5. Loki established that Kang is thousands, perhaps even millions of variants, many of whom typically end up being evil despots of their respective realities. As gender-swapped versions of variants have been seen before, as with Sylvia in Loki, there's some precedence for the theory.
The basis of this theory revolves around Iron Lad, a Kang variant in the comic who goes on to become a suit-wearing hero like Iron Man. While possible, it simply makes no narrative sense that Ironheart would fulfill this role in the MCU. Needing some dramatic tie to the main villain or explanation for her technical skill would simply diminish Riri's character as a hero, who already didn't get much room to shine in her single appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
6 Makes Sense: Kang Will Be Killed Off To Establish A New Threat Would Be A Shocking Way To Suddenly Sell A New Enemy Close Even before the reveal of Jonathan Majors' firing from the MCU, Kang wasn't entirely well-received as a Marvel villain. Lacking the depth or personality of favorite MCU villains like Loki or Thanos, Kang simply isn't as memorable, and is split up between to many versions of himself to even be considered a single worthy antagonist. What he does establish, however, is a strong foundation with which a new villain could test themselves.
The dramatic appearance of a previously-unseen villain could be made all the more memorable should they take out the threat of Kang, immediately selling their threat to the audience. Candidates for such an honor could include Beyonder, the cosmic entity behind the Secret Wars storyline that could directly set up the next film. Fan-favorite villain Doctor Doom is also on the table now that the Fantastic Four have been confirmed for the MCU, making for a tantalizing rug-pull villain introduction.
5 Doesn't Make Sense: Every Multiverse Villain Is A Kang Variant Runs Too Far With No Way Home's Premise Close Slowly seeding the precedence for multiple universes before Kang officially takes on the Avengers, the MCU has dipped its toes in the multiversal waters with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home. The latter included the presence of some classic Spider-Man villains from other universes, hinting at even more. One theory posits that all these villains are actually Kang, eager to break through the dimensional barriers.
More importantly, it diminishes the character of other beloved antagonists like Doctor Octopus or the Green Goblin, essentially writing Spider-Man's villains out of his own story.
This idea falls flat as a concept for several reasons. For one, it faces the same retcon issues as other theories, always a dangerous proposition in the face of fan reception. More importantly, it diminishes the character of other beloved antagonists like Doctor Octopus or the Green Goblin, essentially writing Spider-Man's villains out of his own story. An alligator version of Loki might be fine for a one-off gag character, but basing a film around drastically different people who all turn out to be Kang would be a recipe for disaster.
4 Makes Sense: Kang Will Return As A Hero Kang Could Redeem Himself With An Outlier Variant Close Kang was supposedly killed at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but there's plenty of options for the universe conqueror to return. In fact, it could very well be the case that not only will Kang return, but he'll do so as a hero, standing against his other selves. While the Kang introduced in the third Ant-Man might not be the most benevolent of characters, he could still be instrumental in fighting back the horde of Kang's following in his footsteps.
Sure to stand against the other Kangs, the return of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Kang could turn the tide for the Avengers in Avengers 5. This would mirror Loki's own journey of redemption throughout the MCU, a satisfying arc that the series would do well to replicate in the mainline movies. The only issue is the optics of selling Jonathan Major's character as a good guy all along in the wake of his controversial assault conviction.
3 Doesn't Make Sense: Loki Will Lead The Heroes The God of Stories Shouldn't Return To The MCU Close The finale of Loki was the perfect end to the original Avengers villain's arc in the MCU, redeeming him through great sacrifice as the personification of time in the MCU. That being said, reaching for Tom Hiddleston's beloved performance will be a hard prospect to resist for the upcoming Avengers 5. One theory suggests that Loki won't only appear, but will in fact lead the heroes in the assault against the Kangs.
It's true enough that Loki has re-organized the T.V.A. into an anti-Kang incursion group, ever vigilant against the transgressions of the interdimensional conqueror. But bringing back Loki could threaten to undo all the good will the MCU built up in his series' perfect ending. Nevermind the fact that Loki's presence should merely indicate that the new T.V.A. is working as intended, meaning there's essentially no Kang story possible so long as Loki continues to maintain his hold over the timeline.
2 Makes Sense: Avengers 5 Will Start With A Wedding The MCU Has Already Been Through A Significant Funeral, So Why Not A Marriage As Well? Close Finding an excuse to bring the most powerful heroes of the MCU, each with their own stories, concerns, and realms to watch over, together is one of the hardest parts of any major crossover film. Typically, the solution to this has been to provide a big enough threat, whether it be Loki, Thanos, or even Ultron. However, it could be an interesting change of pace to see a celebration of romance be the impotus behind the Avengers' reconciliation going into Avengers 5.
Redditor u/TrpTrp26 guesses that a marriage between Sue Storm and Reed Richards could be the perfect inciting incident to bring the old team back together in Avengers 5. Contrasting Tony Stark's funeral in Avengers: Endgame, the wedding could gather all the heroes in one place before disaster inevitably strikes, just like the party scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This even has precedence in the comics, with The Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic's wedding being crashed by villains in the source material.
1 Doesn't Make Sense: Avengers 5 Will Make Kang A Sympathetic Villain Which Would Somehow Be Worse Than Making Him A Hero Close The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had its fair share of sympathetic villains. As far as Kang is concerned, he hasn't done much to prove to audiences that he's anything more than a power-hungry despot with incredible technology, with no clear sympathetic goal beyond the absolute control of the multiverse. Avengers 5 could give the character depth much like Avengers: Infinity War did to Thanos, describing him as a man who genuinely believes in his cause, no matter how mad it may be.
Some have theorized that Kang will be the "protagonist" of Avengers 5 much like how Thanos was, giving his goals more depth. Beyond simply being a repeat of what has already been done, this theory doesn't make sense for a multitude of reasons. Painting Kang as a misunderstood villain would be utterly tone-deaf in the shadow of the Jonathan Majors controversy, and the villain has had plenty more time in the spotlight compared to Thanos already. The ship has already sailed for Avengers 5 to make Kang sympathetic.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is the fifth Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will bring together heroes, new and old, to face off against the omnipotent Kang the Conquerer. The Kang Dynasty will also mark the beginning of phase 6 of the MCU.
