New realistic Marvel art sees the Summers family come to life from the X-Men '97 TV show. 2024 marked a new beginning for the X-Men: The Animated Series show, as the franchise made its comeback with a sequel, X-Men '97, which has swiftly become one of Marvel Studios' biggest recent successes. While X-Men '97 is drawing in fans all the way from the 1990s, the mutants are also getting a whole new audience who are getting to experience this specific iteration of the characters.
One of the most well-received aspects of the X-Men '97 TV show is how it has explored fan-favorite character, including Summers family, as Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Cable have gotten some proper time in the spotlight throughout the season. To honor their team-up from X-Men '97 season 1, Dipankar Talukdar shared new realistic artwork, bringing the Summers family to life.
The X-Men '97 artwork perfectly captures what it would look like if all three characters had their costumes and designs directly adapted from the animated show into live-action. As Marvel Studios is developing an X-Men reboot, time will tell if X-Men '97 will have any influence on their Marvel Cinematic Universe counterparts.

How X-Men '97 Is Redeeming The Summers Family Close Outside of animation, the Summers family has not exactly had the best track record in X-Men's live-action history. During 20th Century Fox's era of Marvel movies, Jean and Scott Summers were naturally part of the franchise's main players. While Famke Janssen and James Marsden played them in the original X-Men trilogy, Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan played their younger counterparts in the X-Men prequels - though both iterations saw criticism surrounding the lack of meaningful characterization the movies allowed the heroes to have.
X-Men '97 makes up for the live-action mistakes of the franchise by ensuring Jean and Scott are not just as formidable as they are in the comics, but also three-dimensional figures with their own distinct lives, morals, and motivations to drive them. This is exemplified through their complicated bond with Cable, as both Jean and Scott are shown with a lot of feelings about the unusual circumstances involved in meeting Nathan.
Even though Cable has only appeared in one live-action project, Josh Brolin's portrayal of him in Deadpool 2 was arguably more comic-accurate and authentic to the character, though aspects were obviously set up more for a Deadpool-focused movie than one focused more on Brolin's time-traveling anti-hero. This makes the X-Men '97 depiction more noteworthy in that it is able to show far more about Cable's complexities, as the character is one key character in a roster of figures who all get their own moments.
Hopefully, Marvel Studios will have the same care for the Summers family as they have demonstrated in X-Men '97 regardless of who gets cast as any of the trio in the MCU. Based on the MCU's more long-running format, the franchise could well be the first place where Scott Jean and Cable get to have live-action adventures together that can expand more upon their unique dynamic. But for now, the world can keep catching the Summers family together through X-Men '97 on Disney+.
