James Gunn"s Latest Superman Update Makes Me Worried About Its Biggest MCU Competitor

Summary
  • Superman and The Fantastic Four face pressure with highly anticipated 2025 releases only two weeks apart.
  • Detailed updates from James Gunn ease worries about Superman's VFX quality, planning to avoid reshoots seen in recent superhero films.
  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps faces a rushed production timeline compared to Superman, possibly benefiting from Blade's potential delay.
The updates provided by James Gunn about 2025's Superman have me worried about its biggest MCU competitor, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. While Superman and The Fantastic Four will likely be two very different movies, they will be released within weeks of one another. Superman is the upcoming DCU movie that will kickstart Gunn's new version of the franchise, while The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be aiming to get Marvel's First Family right on-screen for the first time. As an upcoming Marvel movie of great importance, The Fantastic Four has a lot of pressure on it.
Similarly, though, James Gunn's Superman movie has its own pressures given the mistreatment of the character in the DCEU and the failures of the DC brand in theaters of late. As such, July 2025 is an important month for both Marvel Studios and DC Studios, with the two comic book giants releasing highly anticipated movies only two weeks apart. That said, the Superman updates that Gunn recently provided have eased my worries about the DCU film, all while worsening some I hold for The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
