Every Hidden Clue Marvel Hid In Agatha"s First Episodes & Meanings Explained

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Agatha All Along episode 1, "Seekest Thou the Road," and episode 2, "Circle Sewn with Fate/Unlock Thy Hidden Gate"
There have already been many clues and teases to upcoming MCU storylines hidden in the first two episodes of Marvel Television"s Agatha All Along. Marvel"s first WandaVision spinoff finally released on Disney+ with a double-premiere on September 18, bringing Kathryn Hahn"s original Salem witch, Agatha Harkness, back into the MCU. Joined by a new coven of powerful witches, Agatha Harkness and Joe Locke"s mysterious "Teen" have set out on a journey down the infamous Witches" Road, hoping for great power at the end.
It seemed appropriate that Agatha All Along"s first episode opened with a true crime-style narrative, as the Marvel Television series has already created some of the MCU"s biggest and most captivating mysteries. There have been many hints, teases, tricks and clues established in Agatha All Along"s first two episodes that will keep audiences talking throughout the entire series. Questions have been raised about "Teen", Nicholas Scratch, Rio Vidal, the Darkhold and the Scarlet Witch, raising anticipation for some much-needed answers in Agatha All Along"s upcoming episodes.
10 Agnes & John Collins Reference The Scarlet Witch's Death The Scarlet Witch Met Her Demise In Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness Close Although Elizabeth Olsen"s Scarlet Witch hasn"t appeared in Agatha All Along just yet, there have been many mentions towards Wanda Maximoff, and possible hints at her returning to the MCU. The opening moments of Agatha All Along"s premiere saw Agatha, in her Agnes O"Connor guise, and John Collins skirt around the death of the Scarlet Witch. John Collins notes that the as-yet-unidentified corpse in the woods was crushed by something heavy, just as Wanda was crushed by the collapsing Mount Wundagore, and then implies she is similar to The Wizard of Oz"s Wicked Witch of the West.
Related Scarlet Witch's MCU Return Took Seconds For Agatha All Along To Set Up Agatha All Along picks back up with the witch years after WandaVision, and the new MCU show teases the Scarlet Witch"s return rather quickly.
2 John Collins clarifies that she is "really, most sincerely dead," quoting The Wizard of Oz. However, Agnes responds by stating "you never know" and giving a wink, implying there may be some way for the Scarlet Witch to return, despite her death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Agnes even suggests that the corpse"s hair is the color scarlet, very nearly name-dropping the Scarlet Witch. Agatha All Along"s cast and crew have stayed mum on whether Elizabeth Olsen will appear in the series, but this seems to be a real possibility.
9 The Darkhold & Mount Wundagore Agatha Harkness Owned The Darkhold Before Wanda Maximoff Close The MCU"s official version of the Darkhold, the Book of the Damned, was introduced in WandaVision in the possession of Agatha Harkness. Wanda Maximoff stole the book from Agatha, but the Darkhold"s influence on Agatha can still be felt in Agatha All Along. The body in the woods is found with a library card for a book titled "Dialogue and Rhetoric: Known History of Learning & Debate," with the first letter of each word coming together to spell Darkhold, and this book was also written by an Andrew Ugo, which is an anagram of Wundagore.
The MCU"s version of the Darkhold is very different to that seen in Marvel Television"s Agents of SHIELD and Runaways, supporting the fact that these shows are not canon to the MCU"s main continuity.
Mount Wundagore housed the castle where Chthon first engraved the spells of the Darkhold, and was the location of the Scarlet Witch"s death in Phase 4. While "every copy" of the Darkhold was confirmed to have been destroyed, the library card for the mysterious book seems to confirm that there have been nine owners of the Darkhold, including A. Harkness and W. Maximoff. It"s unclear who the remaining seven owners of the Darkhold were, but perhaps Agatha All Along can provide some answers to burning questions surrounding the Book of the Damned.
8 A Car Crash In Eastview There Are Mysteries Surrounding Eastview In Agatha All Along's First Two Episodes Close While in her Agnes, true crime-style guise, Agatha mentions a car accident occurring in Eastview an hour before the corpse in the woods" time of death. While Agatha theorizes that the individual may have been killed elsewhere and brought to the woods, perhaps contributing to blood stains in the backseat of the car, she surmises that she hasn"t yet identified the connection. Even so, Agnes is adamant that there is a connection between the car accident and the body in the woods, and Eastview could provide the answer.
There is a curious mystery unfolding here...
In Agatha All Along"s second episode, Joe Locke"s "Teen" begins to explain a little about himself, but is drowned out in silence. Before he is censored, however, he can be heard saying he was born and raised in Eastview, so perhaps the car accident in Eastview had something to do with him. He was, after all, hit by a car that Sharon Davis was driving after being chased from Agatha Harkness" house in the previous episode. There is a curious mystery unfolding here, and only Agatha All Along"s upcoming episodes will be able to provide the answers.
7 Agatha's Painting Depicts The Three Witches Shakespeare's Three Witches Fuel Macbeth's Ambition To Become King Close The painting that Agnes begins to see as the illusion of her true crime-style world begins to splinter and fade away carries a huge amount of significance for Agatha All Along. This painting by Francesco Zuccarelli from the 18th Century depicts Macbeth and Banquo meeting the Three Witches at the beginning of Shakespeare"s Macbeth. In Macbeth, the witches deliver a prophecy of the titular Macbeth becoming King, which begins his obsession with the position and kick-starts the tragedy of the play. This was one of the first major depictions of witches in popular culture.
Related Agatha All Along Episode 1 & 2 Easter Eggs And Marvel References Agatha All Along has premiered its first two episodes on Disney+, and both are full of exciting Easter eggs, Marvel references, and WandaVision ties.
Zuccarelli"s painting itself is also important, as this was the first European painting to depict fictional characters in a landscape, opening the door for the Neo-Gothic movement which would, one day, lead to Agatha All Along"s creation. It makes sense that Agatha Harkness would have this work of art hung in her house, where her interrogation of "Teen" was actually taking place. In fact, it"s even possible that this is the original, as Agatha Harkness was alive prior to the painting"s creation. Agatha All Along can reveal more about this painting"s significance as the series progresses.
6 Rio Vidal Has A "Black Heart" Rio Vidal's Black Heart Hints At Another Significant MCU Villain Close There have simply been too many mentions of a "black heart" to ignore. In Agatha All Along"s premiere, Aubrey Plaza"s Rio Vidal argues that she does indeed have a heart, suggesting that "it"s black, and it beats for [Agatha Harkness]." Lilia Calderu later suggests Vidal is crucial to Agatha"s coven as a Green Witch, but instead of writing Vidal"s name on her list, she simply draws a black heart. Hilariously, Agatha recruits Debra Jo Rupp"s Sharon Davis, a.k.a. WandaVision"s Mrs. Hart, instead of Vidal, but this may have teased Aubrey Plaza"s true character.
Related 3 Years On, The MCU Has Its New Mephisto Obsession There are two huge fan theories about Agatha All Along, but both fans and Marvel can learn a lesson from WandaVision"s previous Mephisto obsession.
1 The repetitive mentions of a "black heart" in reference to Rio Vidal have led some to believe that Aubrey Plaza may be playing the MCU"s version of Marvel Comics" Blackheart. Introduced in 1989"s Daredevil #270, Blackheart is a being created from evil energies by Mephisto, effectively becoming the villain"s son, though Blackheart wages war on his father after finding a fondness for humanity. Mephisto has been heavily rumored to be joining the MCU soon, and Agatha All Along"s possible debut of Blackheart could be the key to the villain"s debut.
5 Nicholas Scratch's Absence Is A Mystery Nicholas Scratch Is Agatha Harkness' Son In Marvel Comics Close While WandaVision teased the existence of Nicholas Scratch, Agatha Harkness" son from Marvel Comics, Agatha All Along has provided confirmation that he was alive. However, he has been noticeably absent from the series, with him only being alluded to. Audiences have seen Scratch"s childhood bedroom, his drawings, a photo of him in Agnes" office, presumably his hair in Agatha"s locket, and his children, the Salem Seven, but there"s been no sign of Scratch himself. This has informed a popular theory that Agatha Harkness may have sacrificed her son to acquire the Darkhold.
Nicholas Scratch"s name is an amalgam of euphemistic terms for the Devil: Old Nick and Old Scratch.
This idea was reinforced in Agatha All Along episode 2, as Jennifer Kale questioned whether "Teen" is "another child sacrifice," which leaves Agatha Harkness speechless. This suggests that Agatha has sacrificed a child before, and it would make sense if this was to acquire something as powerful as the Darkhold, given Agatha"s unquenchable thirst for power. It"s very likely that Agatha will come face-to-face with her vengeful son on the Witches" Road, which can reveal exactly what happened to Nicholas Scratch prior to the series.
4 Lorna Wu On The Witches' Road Lorna Wu's Marvel Comics Counterpart Helped Doctor Strange Close Ali Ahn"s Alice Wu-Gulliver is revealed to be a Blood Witch in Agatha All Along episode 2, that is the child of a witch, in this case, Alice is the daughter of powerful witch and rock goddess Lorna Wu. Lorna Wu, who wrote and performed the most popular version of "The Ballad of the Witches" Road," mysteriously disappeared roughly a year prior to Agatha All Along"s premiere. It was said that Lorna Wu disappeared while walking the Witches" Road, which pushed Alice to join Agatha Harkness" coven in search of answers.
Lorna Wu is inspired by August Wu from Marvel Comics. Both have a band named the Coral Shore, but August Wu is the magical protector of Hong Kong who helps Doctor Strange during his search for Dormammu. It"s unclear whether Lorna Wu and Doctor Strange have ever met in the MCU.
A depiction of Lorna Wu can be seen singing in Agatha All Along"s end credits sequence, suggesting she will have some significance in the series" upcoming episodes. The question about what exactly happened to Lorna Wu may be very important as Agatha Harkness" coven take on the Witches" Road. Audiences have already heard a rendition of "The Ballad of the Witches" Road," but it"s likely that Lorna Wu herself will end up singing the catchy song at some point in the series, hopefully giving Alice Wu-Gulliver the closure she deserves.
3 Sharon Davis Is Green Fingered Sharon Davis Could Actually Be A Green Witch In The MCU Close At first glance, it seems as though Debra Jo Rupp"s Sharon Davis is recruited by Agatha Harkness to join her coven on the Witches" Road simply because her last name in the Scarlet Witch"s Westview Hex was Hart. However, one popular theory suggests that Sharon Davis actually is the Green Witch that is necessary to access and survive the Witches" Road. The unassuming Davis being outed as a witch would fit into Agatha All Along"s genre-play perfectly, as this is an age-old trope of witch-centric movies and TV shows over the years.
Some have suggested Davis could be Rio Vidal in disguise.
Sharon Davis makes several comments about her green fingers in Agatha All Along episode 2, is conveniently in the right place to run over "Teen" in Agatha All Along"s premiere, seems completely comfortable with the witches" performing "The Ballad of the Witches" Road" in Agatha Harkness" basement, and shows no qualms about ridding herself of her shoes and walking down the Witches" Road. Some have suggested Davis could be Rio Vidal in disguise. Either way, it would make complete sense for Sharon Davis to actually be a Green Witch in the MCU.
2 Who Is Joe Locke's "Teen"? There Are Many Hints At Who Joe Locke Might Be Playing In Agatha All Along Close Perhaps the biggest mystery set up for the remainder of Agatha All Along is the true identity of Joe Locke"s "Teen". He knows a great deal about Agatha Harkness and witchcraft in general, suggesting he has studied the subject for years. However, the slight appearance of blackening on his fingers could hint at him dabbling in darker magic, such as that in the Darkhold. His name is censored by what looks like an "M", perhaps hinting at him being Billy Kaplan, the reincarnated form of Billy Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch"s son.
Related The MCU's Next Rumored Magic User Would Make Scarlet Witch's Death Even Worse Agatha Harkness" spin-off show Darkhold Diaries could make the Scarlet Witch"s death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness even worse.
It"s all but confirmed that Joe Locke"s "Teen" is the MCU"s Billy Kaplan, who becomes the Young Avenger Wiccan in Marvel Comics. This hasn"t been officially revealed, however, so the door is open for a surprise in Agatha All Along"s future. Even so, it seems as though the only sorcerer powerful enough to break a spell cast by the Scarlet Witch would be her own son, and the trailer for Agatha All Along episode 3 may have shown "Teen" using blue magic, similarly to Billy Kaplan in Marvel Comics.
1 Agatha All Along's End Credits Contain Many Hidden Details Agatha All Along's Credits Run Through The History Of Witchcraft Close Agatha All Along"s end credits sequence includes many references to the history of witchcraft both in reality and in popular culture. Most notably, witchy projects such as Bewitched, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Wizard of Oz, The Craft and The Simpsons are referenced. An image of Irene Ray, a woman accused of witchcraft in 1938, can also be seen, as can the image of the fictional Lorna Wu. There are also snippets of several articles detailing trials of witches throughout the ages, all set to the tune of "Season of the Witch" by Donovan.
Hahn is set to appear in green make-up in an upcoming episode.
The end credits sequence also explains why Agatha Harkness" witches remove their shoes before walking on the Witches" Road, as it is hallowed ground, and they must feel the connection to the Earth. Someone searches the term, "Witches" Road" on Google, presumably "Teen," before a woman in a witch costume poses in front of the sign entering Salem, Massachusetts. There are more paintings and images of witches and their familiars, including cats and rabbits, as well as a mention of Cotten Mather, a Puritan clergyman who was heavily involved in the Salem Witch Trials.

Agatha All Along"s credits also reveal more about the cast. Sasheer Zamata"s name is framed by crystals, hinting at Jennifer Kale"s background in potions, Ali Ahn is framed by a pentagram, and plants blossom for Debra Jo Rupp, hinting at her being a Green Witch. Aubrey Plaza is included with a spider, while tarot cards appear alongside Patti LuPone, specifically The Magician, referring to divination. A green-skinned witch appears with Kathryn Hahn"s name. Hahn is set to appear in green make-up in an upcoming episode of Agatha All Along, which could provide answers to these burning questions and niggling mysteries.
Joe Locke"s name appears with the phrase "Near Death in Westview," perhaps supporting the idea of him being involved in the Eastview car crash.
