Superman"s Cast Officially Grows As James Gunn Confirms DCU Crossover Star"s Role

The first DC Universe crossovers in James Gunn"s upcoming franchise, including the new Superman movie, are confirmed by the DC Studios co-CEO. It has been over a year since the initial Chapter 1 Gods and Monsters slate was announced by Gunn and Peter Safran. As 2024 nears its end, the new DC Universe is getting ready to launch, ushering in a new era for DC on TV and film.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn took the opportunity to confirm Frank Grillo"s upcoming appearance in the Superman movie as his character, Rick Flag Sr. Grillo will first appear in Creature Commandos, then Superman, then Peacemaker season 2. Gunn also elaborated on Rick"s larger role in the DC Universe across multiple projects, sharing the following:

He is a really cool character that Frank has been molding. The character"s also in Superman, and he"s an incredibly important part in Peacemaker. He is one of the primary characters in Peacemaker season 2. So we get to see this character from different angles, and he is not simple. This isn"t just a good guy, not at all. We see all different sides of his character. He is morally a complex human being. Grillo is somebody who I"ve known for a little while, and I"ve wanted to work with him for a long time. He was one of the first people that I talked to when I took over the studio, like "we"re going to find something cool for you," and now he is everywhere.

What Frank Grillo's Role Means For The DCU Close While the DC Universe audience will see his debut in the Creature Commandos TV show, Gunn"s new comments indicate that Rick"s role in this franchise will continue to grow. Even though Rick may not be as big of a character in the comics as Superman, it"s clear that Gunn wants to not only set up more crossovers within the DC Universe, but give someone like Grillo"s character more meat. That is why fans will only have to wait less than a year to see Grillo"s Rick in live-action after the Creature Commandos series.

Despite the fact that there were crossovers in the DCEU movie timeline, Gunn"s recent commentary on the DC Universe shows that they want to take it to a higher level. Whatever goes down in Creature Commandos will clearly set up Rick to have a key role as part of the Superman movie cast. Then, the 2025 movie may or may not play a key factor in why Rick shows up in Peacemaker season 2, as Gunn has teased that there is unfinished business between him and John Cena"s titular character.
Our Take On James Gunn's DCU Crossover Comments It"s exciting to see that Gunn"s DC Universe is already planning crossovers, but those that are more organically and thought-out, rather than something that was put together at the last minute. Since actors who play their characters in animation will also portray their live-action counterparts, that means they have to be even more observant of who they cast, especially if they have storylines mapped out for said characters. Hopefully, when the first Superman trailer is released, it will give a better idea of what to expect of Rick in the film and beyond.
