For nearly 60 years, the Star Trek franchise has been proving the truth of the iconic line, "Space, the final frontier," but now a classic character is calling that statement into question. In the story "A Perfect System" from Star Trek #400, Gary Mitchell predicts the future of humanity and reveals the true "final frontier."
Gary Mitchell was born a human but with an unusually high esper (extrasensory perception) rating. By the mid-23rd century he had become a lieutenant commander with Starfleet, a helmsman on the original USS Enterprise, and a close friend of James Kirk. But an encounter with the unusual energies of the galactic barrier accelerated his latent ESP and evolutionarily catapulted him forward, granting him god-like powers. He was presumably killed by Kirk, but in truth he survived as the first hyper-evolved human in history, but perhaps not the last.
