A major
MCU hero’s death in Phase 4 highlights a growing problem with the franchise's high-powered heroes. Upon her introduction in Avengers: Age of Ultron,
Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) gradually became one of the most powerful and popular MCU heroes. She was a reliable avenue for complex emotional beats, and as her story developed, so too did the scope and strength of her abilities. Therefore, when Avengers: Infinity War rolled around, Wanda was one of the few characters who posed a genuine threat to Thanos’ invasion, and if she wasn’t preoccupied with protecting Vision, she might have turned the tides of the fight.
More often than not, Wanda’s journey has been filled with deeply tragic lows. The loss of her brother in Avengers: Age of Ultron, her cruel imprisonment and the world’s impression of her in Captain America: Civil War, and Vision’s death in Avengers: Infinity War all set her on a dark path. Her villainous turn at the height of her powers in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was significant, considering how integral Scarlet Witch is to the MCU's multiverse as a nexus being. Importantly, her death not only complicates this connection but also highlights a growing pattern in the MCU in how it handles characters like Scarlet Witch.
Scarlet Witch Was Killed After Fully Unlocking Her Powers
When she faced Thanos by herself, he needed to bomb his own army to stop Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Endgame. That was when Wanda became a clear contender for the competitive title of “MCU’s Strongest Avenger.” WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness further promoted this idea despite her turn from the light and propelled her to the top of the list. Wanda officially became the prophesied Scarlet Witch, unlocking her true powers of chaos magic. She can rewrite the fabrics of reality around her, and using the Darkhold only augmented their chaotic and destructive potential.
Scarlet Witch is more than a moniker like Iron Man. It defines Wanda as the legendary and incredibly powerful entity foreseen by the Darkhold’s creator, Chthon. She is prophesied to either rule the multiverse or be its doom. This makes her death all the more interesting to consider. She was taken off the board in large part because the MCU couldn’t do much with someone so powerful at the moment. The MCU still has to set up and progress other storylines to build up to Phase 6’s Avengers movies. Therefore, Scarlet Witch was sacrificed, and now she bides her time until the MCU is ready for her presumed return.
Naturally, Scarlet Witch’s significant multiversal connection practically guarantees her return. However, how the MCU will treat her and use her is still in question. Given their track record, they could sideline her as they did throughout much of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Fortunately, her status as a nexus being and potential for redemption ensure she should be a central figure when she’s back in the game. In fact, an Avengers: Secret Wars theory claims that Scarlet Witch and her astonishing powers may help reshape the entire multiverse. If done authentically, such would allow the MCU to showcase her to her fullest extent.
The MCU Has Pushed Other Powerful Characters Aside
On their own, they can shine, but when it comes to crossover movies, the other “Strongest Avengers” contenders have posed similar problems for the MCU, and so they’ve been written off in various ways. Aptly, Captain Marvel was gifted extraordinary cosmic powers, and she proved how effective she could be against Thanos by instantly helping the Avengers kill him at the top of Avengers: Endgame. Yet, they kept her off-world for much of the film until it was time she could come flying in to save the day. She was so powerful that all she could be was a sort of deus ex machina, and her character was largely ignored.
Hulk numbers among the most significantly offended too. As with Thor in Thor: Ragnarok, Hulk developed in a major way, and he was positioned to be an equal threat to Thanos. However, when Avengers: Infinity War came around because they needed to give Bruce an arc, Hulk was essentially depowered, and his development’s inertia was canceled out. In this case, this was done to help showcase Thanos’ own strength and the threat he poses, but it’s still a case of the MCU eliminating one of their most powerful heroes for the sake of the story.
