Spider-Man: No Way Home Sandman Actor Reveals MCU Return Talks

2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home was meant to feature more of Thomas Haden Church's Sandman, and the actor opens up about just what that would have looked like and reveals the existence of talks about a Sandman return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: No Way Home was an unprecedented event movie, uniting the three live-action Spider-Man actors — Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland — with five villains from across the Spider-Man movie franchise's history. Church's Sandman was one such villain, but he had a minor role in the packed movie.
Speaking with The DisInsider, Church revealed that Spider-Man: No Way Home was originally meant to include a plot involving Sandman's daughter, who was a big part of the character's story in Sam Raimi's controversial Spider-Man 3. That plot line ended up being cut due to the film already having too many moving parts. However, the story could still resurface, as the actor revealed that he has had talks with Spider-Man MCU trilogy director Jon Watts, producer Amy Pascal, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about a possible Sandman return in the future with a bigger focus on the character. “We had a whole story involving his daughter, for No Way Home. And it just ended up [cut]. There was just so much going on."
“Jon and I and Amy [Pascal] and Kevin, we all had a lot of conversations. And I would say that conversations have been had about the possibility of Sandman coming into a future iteration of it. The conversation has happened about him coming back, and maybe picking up a more fulfilling story. You know? With Flint and being not just Sandman, but returning to human form.”

Why Sandman Should Return In The MCU After Spider-Man: No Way Home Raimi's Spider-Man 3 introduced the tragic story of Flint Marko to the franchise, with Church beautifully bringing the character's compelling backstory to life. Marko became a villain because he thought it was the only way he could get enough cash fast to pay for his young daughter's treatment, as she was shown to be dying from an unspecified sickness. Church's return in Spider-Man: No Way Home brought no mention of his character's daughter whatsoever, which felt off. It makes sense that Marvel originally planned to include that relationship in the movie.
It also makes sense why Sandman's daughter was ultimately left out. Spider-Man: No Way Home was a crowded movie, and some characters were bound to get the short end of the stick. Rhys Ifans' Lizard and Church's Sandman were left on the sidelines, with both characters appearing primarily with the use of CGI, only to have their actors be seen through the use of archival footage from past Spider-Man movies at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, when Sandman and Lizard were cured.
