Starfleet Academy Is A Major Update Of An Old Star Trek Idea

Paramount+'s upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series is a major update on an old idea featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series. Scheduled to begin production in 2024, Starfleet Academy is apparently set in the 32nd century after Star Trek: Discovery ends with season 5. Co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau's announcement begins with "For the first time in over a century...", which indicates Starfleet Academy is about the new institution reopening after The Burn in Star Trek: Discovery season 4.
Although no cast or characters were announced, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's premise is about "a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself." This concept suitably slots into Star Trek on Paramount+s growing universe, but it's also quite different from the original idea for a Starfleet Academy movie over 30 years ago.
