Quarren vs. Mon Calamari: Ancient Star Wars Rivalry Explained

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6.
The Mandalorian season 3 alludes to the Star Wars franchise’s ancient rivalry between two amphibious species, the Quarren and the Mon Calamari. The two sapient cephalopods are native to the planet Mon Cala (also known as Dac or simply Mon Calamari), but in both the canon and Legends continuities, the two have a long history of conflict and, on occasion, relationships that defy the species’ hostile pasts with each other. The Mandalorian acknowledges this history through an unlikely romance.
In the opening of The Mandalorian episode “Chapter 22: Guns for Hire,” Axe Woves and his crew board the vessel of Quarren Captain Shuggoth, which includes her lover, who is the son of a Mon Calamari viceroy. Shuggoth attempts to hide her lover from Woves, noting that the Mon Calamari and Quarren are finally at peace (something she dares not threaten), but the Mandalorians see through the ruse and apprehend the Mon Calamari. Shuggoth’s words reference the Quarren and Mon Calamari’s Clone Wars-era history in both canon and Legends, and her romance with the viceroy’s son is not the first of its kind in the Star Wars franchise.
