Marvel Studios introduces a new villain to the MCU in The Marvels, adapted from the nefarious Dar-Benn from Marvel Comics. British actor Zawe Ashton was confirmed to have joined the cast of The Marvels in February 2021, reported to be portraying the film's villain opposite Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel; Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau, a.k.a. Photon; and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. Dar-Benn was a short-lived adversary in Marvel Comics, but Ashton's live-action iteration promises to pose a huge threat, not only to The Marvels' titular team but also to the entirety of the universe, pushing forward the MCU's Multiverse Saga in some truly unexpected ways.
The Marvels was confirmed to be in development by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige in 2019, directed by Nia DaCosta and acting as the sequel to 2019's smash-hit Captain Marvel. While The Marvels continues the story of Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, she is joined by new heroes Photon and Ms. Marvel in The Marvels, both of whom acquired their light-based abilities in Marvel Studios TV shows on Disney+, WandaVision and Ms. Marvel, respectively. The Marvels will also mark the return of Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, joining some of the MCU's most powerful heroes in battle against Zawe Ashton's Dar-Benn, a mysterious new addition to Marvel Studios' terrifying villain roster.
Dar-Benn Marvel Comics History Explained Dar-Benn first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1991's Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) #53, introduced as a General in the Imperial Kree Army alongside his ally Ael-Dan. Dar-Benn and Ael-Dan had grown tired of the rule of then-Kree Emperor Clumsy Foulup and devised plans to assassinate him and rule in his place. To accomplish this, Dar-Benn and Ael-Dan built a robotic version of the Silver Surfer, the Herald of Galactus, who they sent to kill Foulup, and blame his assassination on the Skrulls, who the Kree had been at war with for thousands of years. This led to Dar-Benn and Ael-Dan ascending to the role of joint-Emperors over the Kree Empire.
