Summary
- Scarlet Witch's death in the MCU feels premature and she deserves a heroic exit.
- Ultron's permanent death in Age of Ultron was disappointing as he could have been a recurring villain.
- Malekith's potential as Thor's long-running nemesis was wasted and he became a forgettable character.
The
Marvel Cinematic Universe has delivered more than a few iconic villains, but a few foes have had their time cut disappointingly short. Marvel Studio's historic shared universe has reached unparalleled popularity in large part due to the wonderful casting and performances of its heroes, but any hero is elevated by an equally compelling villain. Even the MCU has limits to how much content it can produce, so it makes sense that not every villain can stick around for multiple movies, but it's still disappointing when it feels like there should be more to see.
However, there may yet still be time to deliver on the potential of antagonists thought long gone. While the book is completely closed for some of the MCU's villains, others may still have hope to return from death and continue their stories. The multiverse makes almost anything possible in the MCU, so even death may not be too big of a problem.

While it seems possible - or even probable - that Scarlet Witch returns to the MCU in the future, the official MCU timeline book confirms that, for now, she's really dead. If that death sticks, it certainly feels like Wanda has been taken too soon. The character deserves to die a hero, not a powerful villain.
9 The Age Of Ultron Was More Like A Weekend Died In Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ultron is scary because he exists intangibly as a digital AI, and taking out any physical body only delays him coming back in another one. This is touched on in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it was ultimately disappointing when the metal tyrant is permanently killed by Vision at the end of the movie. Especially early, the MCU received criticism for failing to establish multi-appearance villains, and
Ultron would have been the perfect Avengers foe to pop up time and time again across different projects.

Thor: The Dark World is generally considered one of the more forgettable movies in the MCU, largely due to Malekith. Despite being played by the charismatic and talented Christopher Eccleston, Malekith is a cliche villain with poor dialogue and an overly generic plan for conquest. In Marvel Comics, Malekith is a long-time, reoccurring villain for Thor, and future MCU appearances could have delved into his talent with magic - something missing from his lone live-action showing. Too much time has passed to bring him back now, leaving Malekith the Accursed little more than a disappointing misstep in the Thor movie franchise.
7 Kro Seemed Set Up For A Much Better Ending Died In Eternals
Eternals is one of the more divisive MCU projects, as some praise the movie's slower pace and gorgeous on-location backdrops, while others find the characters underdeveloped and the villain disappointing. While some points of contention are a matter of opinion, there's little doubt that the Deviant Kro was killed too soon. The villain seemed set up to join the Eternals in their fight against Ikaris in the movie's climax, but he was rather quickly and anticlimactically killed before that happened.
6 Kaecilius Largely Wasted A Talented Actor Died In Doctor Strange
Kaecilius is a perfectly serviceable antagonist in Doctor Strange, and the character reaches a narratively fitting end when he's absorbed into the Dark Dimension. With Kaecilius, the villain's death didn't come too soon because of anything in the movie but instead because acclaimed actor Mads Mikkelsen never really got a scene to flex his incredible acting chops. There may still be hope, though. With the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness teasing a return to the Dark Dimension, Mikkelsen could play the humanoid form of Dormammu classically seen in Marvel Comics.
5 Ulysses Klaue Had The Makings Of A Long-Running Black Panther Villain Died In Black Panther
Andy Serkis may be best known for his motion capture work, but he imbues Black Panther's Ulysses Klaue with a wonderful, slimy charisma that helps him steal each scene he's in. Unfortunately, after also playing a small role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Killmonger shoots Klaue and delivers him to Wakanda as a show of strength. The plot would have worked the same if Klaue had been delivered alive, and
a black market dealer like him is the perfect character for recurring appearances in Black Panther movies and other MCU projects.
4 MODOK Has So Much More Potential Died In Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania Close The decision to change MODOK's origin in the MCU to line up with Darren Cross's brutal end in Ant-Man was a smart one, but killing him off in the same movie as his return means that MODOK's potential has been left woefully unfulfilled. Like George Tarleton, the man who becomes MODOK in Marvel Comics, Cross is an experienced scientist and could have gone on to rebuild AIM after its disappointingly subtle inclusion in Iron Man 3. With his death, however, it seems
MODOK will never go on to lead his team of evil scientists.
3 Kang The Conqueror Didn't Do Much Conquering Seemingly Died In Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania
Unlike Thanos, who only briefly appeared in a few MCU projects before Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios has decided to flesh Kang out with several major appearances before his eventual headline role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The big bad's full debut came in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he was shown trapped in the Quantum Realm and trying to escape. The movie does a lot of telling about how scary he is, but
by the time he's seemingly killed by his Quantum Engine, he hasn't actually done much on screen to back up his reputation.
2 Baron Strucker Is Baraely A Character In The MCU Died In Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Part of what makes Hydra such a compelling evil group is the constant inner turmoil as different leaders vie for power. One such storied Hydra leader is Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, who's briefly shown experimenting on the Maximoff twins in the Captain America: Civil War post-credits scene and is killed in Avengers: Age of Ultron's opening battle. Had Strucker stuck around, he could have developed into the fascinating character he has the potential to be. At a minimum, it would have been great to see his Satan Claw - a metallic gauntlet super-weapon - shine.
1 Arnim Zola Never Got His Fully Upgraded Body Died In Captain America: The Winter Soldier Close Hydra played an important role in the first two phases of the MCU, but several characters had their arc cut off woefully short. One such example is Hydra scientist Arnim Zola, who appears in the flesh in Captain America: The First Avenger and later as a virtual being in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. However, the villain could have used one more movie to reach his final form from Marvel Comics - a humanoid robot body housing Zola's digitized mind.
MCU concept art reveals unused Zola designs that bring this to life, but the look was ultimately limited to the animated What If...?
