Marvel’s Multiverse Needs To Become More Than A Nostalgia Machine

The multiverse has been used as a nostalgia machine since the Marvel Cinematic Universe broke open the concept, something that drastically needs to change. The first MCU project to deal with the concept of the multiverse at length was Loki season 1. This show managed to weave the multiverse seamlessly into its story, with little to no fan service found throughout its six episodes. Outside of the multiple versions of Loki, the series was largely self-contained until its final episode.
However, other MCU projects that have dealt with the multiverse since Loki have tended to use the multiverse as a nostalgia machine. While this often works for Marvel Studios, in that the higher-ups usually think of good ways to utilize fan service in a way that fits the story, the Multiverse Saga's final two MCU phases cannot rely entirely on the multiverse in the same way. Going into Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, the MCU needs to find a way to keep the multiverse central to its stories outside of using legacy characters from decades past.
