Marvel Has A Villain Problem & Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Shows How To Fix It

Warning! Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 shows how Marvel Studios can fix its villain problem. Functioning as the final outing for the original Guardians of the Galaxy roster, the Marvel Cinematic Universe threequel also tackles Rocket Raccoon's heartbreaking origins story. James Gunn's final MCU project is reminiscent of the franchise's Infinity Saga film with its mix of humor, heart, and action. Aside from its commitment to delivering a satisfying send-off to the beloved galactic heroes, another big triumph for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is its hedonistic villain — the High Evolutionary, brilliantly played by Chukwudi Iwuji.
As beloved as the Infinity Saga is, it isn't without its share of criticisms. MCU Phases 1-3 have been called out for their formulaic storytelling. Aside from that, another big franchise issue has been its villain. Marvel Studios seem to be consciously trying to rectify this problem, introducing the likes of Erik Killmonger and Thanos. In the Multiverse Saga, some standouts are Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Wenwu/Mandarin and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Namor the SubMariner. Still, many of the universe's recent bad guys are either forgettable or a massive disappointment.
