DC's
The Flash continues a frustrating superhero suit trend that desperately needs to meet an end. Ezra Miller returns as Barry Allen in what might be the actor's best performance yet in the role. Miller is joined in The Flash by a wide array of heroes that include Sasha Calle's Supergirl, Michael Keaton's Batman, Ben Affleck's DCEU Batman, and more. The Flash's cast of heroes demands several super suits to be brought to life in the movie, and some look better than others. While The Flash had some genuinely good superhero suits, the movie did end up falling prey to a frustrating superhero suit trend.
One key example of that is how The Flash's Supergirl suit looks better in behind-the-scenes images than it did in the film. There has been a movement happening where practical suits get completely replaced by CGI versions of heroes' costumes — which DC has also done in the past, notably on Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern movie — or there is a layer of CGI over a hero's suit, making the whole thing look unnatural, even if an actor did wear a practical version of their superhero suit on set. Sadly, despite having some good superhero suit concepts, The Flash is another project to fall in line with this distracting superhero suit trend.
The Flash Movie Has Poor CGI, And That Includes The Super Suits
Superhero movies are known for their epic fights, and while they can't be brought to life without the use of CGI, at least the heroes' suits should be practical to base the films on a sense of reality. That is not what happens in The Flash, a movie that is bound to be VFX-heavy due to the nature of its main character's powers, as well as the ambitious scope of its story, which features several DC characters through the use of the multiverse. While a heavy use of VFX was expected from the movie, The Flash had multiple instances of poor CGI, and its superhero suits were affected by it.
At the start of The Flash, every close-up shot of Affleck's Batman on his motorcycle had an uncanny valley feel to it, with his blue cowl looking awful rubber-like due to the faulty CGI. Sadly, that would be a recurring element of the fun film. Miller's Flash suit and Calle's Supergirl costume would both have looked better if they were not given a CGI overlay in many scenes throughout the film. Funnily enough, the suits looked the best when they were not being worn by the characters, as no CGI was employed on them, allowing the suits to really pop. Keaton's Batman also fell prey to the CGI issue.
