Admit It, The Multiverse Is Ruining Comic Book Movies

In recent years, the multiverse has been used in an increasing number of projects developed by Marvel and DC, bringing new realities to their superhero franchises, but bringing its fair share of problems too. The concept of the multiverse dates back to the Ancient Greek philosophers, posing that there are an infinite number of universes in a greater multiverse, each demonstrating an infinite number of variations on the known universe. The grandeur of this concept made it a hot topic of discussion for centuries, though it rose to prominence in the scientific community in the last hundred years, eventually making its way into the stories of Marvel and DC Comics.
The multiverse first became a prominent concept in superhero fiction in 1961's The Flash of Two Worlds, featured in DC Comics' The Flash #123, which saw Barry Allen travel to another universe and meet original Flash Jay Garrick. This was a ground-breaking storyline, paving the way for the multiverse to be used in an innumerable number of stories in the following years. Marvel Comics followed suit in 1971's Avengers #85, which introduced the multiversal Squadron Supreme. When these stories began to be adapted into feature films, audiences didn't have to wait long until the multiverse once again became a crucial plot point, but things may have now gone too far.
