The Real Meaning Of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Explained By James Gunn

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn breaks down the true meaning behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the final chapter in the MCU trilogy that began back in 2014. Adapting a cosmic team from the comics who at the time had very little name recognition, Gunn transformed the Guardians into household names. Now, Gunn's trilogy has officially ended nine years later, though there are things Gunn knew about this final chapter since the very beginning.
In a new interview with The New York Times, Gunn confirms he always knew that the Guardians' core story would always belong to Rocket, the CGI raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper:
"I knew that the whole trilogy is about Rocket, who we think of as a supporting character, becoming the captain of the Guardians"

By the end of this final chapter, Rocket faces his past as one of the High Evolutionary's experiments, finding a purpose bigger than himself. This allows him to become the next captain of the Guardians. However, Rocket's evolution getting to that point is something that was developed throughout all of his past appearances in the MCU.
