Fox from replacing Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, and against all odds, Eric Stoltz' performance as Marty McFly managed to be good enough to inspire Barry's couch-crashing friend Gary to tattoo Stoltz' face on his leg.
In real life, Back to the Future creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale had wanted to cast Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly from the start, but Fox's commitment to the TV series Family Ties forced them to cast Eric Stoltz instead. However, Stoltz didn't understand that Back to the Future was a sci-fi comedy, and his self-serious performance motivated Zemeckis to push for a recast even though filming had already started. Fortunately, Michael J. Fox made an impressive effort to juggle Back to the Future with Family Ties, and the rest is history — at least in real life.
