10 Villain Teams We’d Love To See In The DC Universe

James Gunn’s new DC Universe has the opportunity to feature several supervillain teams that have never appeared in live-action movies. Despite being a far more fantastical, comic-bookish franchise than previous DC films, the current DCEU has barely scratched the potential of DC Comics’ lore. There are still multiple DC villains and heroes who are waiting for a live-action adaptation, many of which would fit perfectly into the DC Universe’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
DC Studios’ new DC Universe is a significant reboot, as new versions of characters such as Superman and Batman will be introduced. James Gunn’s DC Universe slate shows that the new franchise will dive into the cosmic and mystical aspects of DC Comics. As such, here are 10 supervillain teams that would be perfect for the new DC Universe.
11 The Rogues The Flash has one of the best sets of villains in the comics, considering both the DC and Marvel universes. Some of the Flash’s antagonists even have their own team, the Rogues. While the Rogues’ lineup often changes in the comics, it usually involves characters like Captain Cold, Mirror Master, Golden Glider, Weather Wizard, Heat Wave, the Trickster, and Captain Boomerang. Barry Allen has been the Flash in the DCEU since at least the events of Suicide Squad (2016), yet only one of the Flash’s rogues has appeared in the franchise so far. Jai Courtney played Captain Boomerang in both Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad.
Even still, the Flash only interacted with Captain Boomerang during a very brief scene in the first Suicide Squad. Boomerang’s origin story, similar to the rest of the Suicide Squad, was told through a montage. The Flash is finally getting a solo movie in 2023’s The Flash, yet none of Barry Allen’s Rogues are expected to appear. Instead, The Flash will instead be a multiverse story, bringing Man of Steel’s General Zod as one of the antagonists. Whether Ezra Miller will reprise their role as Barry Allen in the new DC Universe remains to be announced. Be it in The Flash 2 or a reboot, the DC Universe needs the Rogues.
10 Legion of Doom The idea of a supervillain team formed by the main antagonists of each Justice League member has existed in the DC Universe for decades and taken different names. Perhaps the most recognizable version of that concept is the Legion of Doom, whose original lineup included Superman villain Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman villain Cheetah, Aquaman villain Black Manta, Green Lantern villain Sinestro, Batman villain Joker, and the Flash villain Gorilla Grodd. Since then, the Legion of Doom has had multiple lineups in comics, animated movies, and animated TV shows. Alternate versions of the Legion of Doom include the Injustice League, the Light, and the Secret Society of Supervillains.
Interestingly, the Legion of Doom came close to being featured in the DCEU twice. Zack Snyder’s Justice League sequels plan included having the Legion of Doom in Justice League 2. Snyder’s Justice League 2 Legion of Doom would have been formed by Doctor Poison, Black Manta, Ocean Master, Lex Luthor, and Captain Cold, the latter of which never appeared in the DCEU. The theatrical Justice League cut, on the other hand, teased that Lex Luthor would form a team of supervillains starting with Deathstroke. However, none of those storylines came to fruition, as Justice League 2 never happened. The new DC Universe can finally use the Legion of Doom.
9 The Elite The Elite might pose themselves as heroes, but they are among the most interesting Superman villains. Whereas some Superman antagonists simply want to take down the Man of Steel in a fight, the Elite threatens Superman on a much deeper level. That is because Manchester Black and his team have a very different approach to being superheroes compared to Superman. The encounters between Superman and the Elite raise the question of what it means to be a superhero, and it challenges the distinction between superheroes and vigilantes. While Manchester Black appeared in Supergirl, the Elite has yet to be featured in a live-action movie.
