Star Trek At NYCC: What Was & Wasn"t Revealed

Summary
  • Star Trek Universe panel at NYCC reveals little new information, disappointing fans. Lack of news due to ongoing strikes and no actors appearing at the panel.
  • Kid Cudi teams up with Star Trek for a multi-platform collaboration involving a new song, a Fortnite game, and streetwear. Unveiled at the panel with Alex Kurtzman and Joshua Horowitz.
  • Star Trek: Prodigy moves to Netflix, with all 20 season 1 episodes debuting in 2023, and 20 all-new season 2 episodes dropping in 2024.
Star Trek beamed into New York Comic Con 2023, but the Star Trek Universe panel revealed little that wasn't already known and the lack of substantial news was disappointing if not unexpected. With the Writer's Guild of America strike resolved, Star Trek producer Alex Kurtzman and Star Trek: Lower Decks creator/showrunner Mike McMahan joined host Joshua Horowitz for the Star Trek Universe NYCC panel. The 75-minute presentation centered on an advance screening of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4, episode 8, "Caves," for the audience in attendance and an appearance by Kid Cudi.
With the SAG-AFTRA strike still ongoing, it meant no actors could appear at Star Trek's NYCC panel to promote the upcoming series still slated for 2024. The strike is likely one of the determining factors as to why little actual Star Trek TV and movie news was revealed at NYCC. The strike continues to hold production on shows such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 at a standstill, and no actors means Paramount+ can't move forward with its initial plans to give the final season of Star Trek: Discovery full-court publicity. Instead, whatever there is to reveal about Star Trek coming up in 2024 was largely held back with Alex Kurtzman offering only vague hints of what Star Trek on Paramount+ will look like in the coming year.
