The DCU Can"t Stop Adapting The Same Batman Comics (But It Needs To)

Summary
  • The upcoming DC Universe will present a fresh take on Batman, breaking away from the comics that have inspired previous movies.
  • The new DC Universe aims to be more faithful to the comics, allowing the Batman reboot to be a true comic book movie.
  • By focusing on different stories, the DC Universe can distinguish its Batman from previous adaptations and create a unique character.
The same Batman comics have been inspiring the hero's movies for years, and it is time for the upcoming DC Universe to change that, presenting a fresh take on the hero. There have been several Batman movies, and most of them, if not all, have taken inspiration from the same group of comics. Ben Affleck's Batman in the DCEU and Robert Pattinson's version of the Dark Knight in The Batman were the latest cases to do so, but the Batman reboot movie The Brave and the Bold in the new DC Universe should look at different comics for its story.
The DC Universe's creative chief and Superman: Legacy's writer/director, James Gunn, has revealed that the new universe will be more in line with the comics than the DCEU, which allows the upcoming DC movie that will reboot Batman to really cement itself as a bonafide comic book movie, escaping the realism of other Batman film adaptations. That choice to make Batman movies more realistic stems largely from the group of comics that have inspired most Batman movies. By choosing to focus on other stories, the DC Universe can distinguish its Batman from the rest.

The DCU Needs To Stop Taking Inspiration From The Same Comics Batman movies such as Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the DCEU as a whole, and Matt Reeves' The Batman have largely been inspired by the same Batman comics. "The Dark Knight Returns," "The Long Halloween," and "Batman: Year One" are some of the most important additions to the Batman mythos, so it is easy to understand why they would inspire so many movie adaptations of the character. Frank Miller's work on Batman was character-defining, changing Batman's public image back to the Dark Knight instead of the lighter version of the hero from the 1960s.
