The Batman"s First Spinoff Gets Exciting Update 8 Months After Filming Paused

Summary
  • The Penguin, a spin-off series for The Batman, is set to resume production after an 8-month pause, indicating a relatively short delay in its release date.
  • The series will focus on the origin story of Oswald Cobblepot (played by Colin Farrell) as he rises to power in Gotham's criminal underworld after the events of The Batman.
  • The gritty and grounded nature of the show means that it is unlikely to heavily rely on time-consuming special effects, potentially allowing for a smoother production process.
As Hollywood returns to normal, The Penguin, the anticipated DC spin-off series for The Batman, has received an exciting update 8 months after filming came to a halt. As part of the Elseworlds continuity of DC releases, The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson in a dark rendition of the titular role, followed Joker in being a critically acclaimed sign of exciting things to come in the DC cinematic space. With two sequels planned for the Elseworlds-based franchise, The Penguin is set to enrich the new Batman franchise's mythos by detailing Oswald Cobblepot's rise to power within Gotham's notorious underworld in response to the power vacuum left by Carmine Falcone.
The DC Elseworlds label is for movies that fall outside the brand's shared cinematic universe.
Now that the SAG-AFTRA strikes have ended, The Penguin is reportedly resuming production next week (via Variety), and filming for the Max spin-off series ground to a halt in March of this year alongside that of other anticipated movies and shows. The knock-on effect has typically been that audiences can expect later release dates for most productions. The MCU, for example, has already shifted two of its three cinematic releases from 2024 to 2025. The prognosis for The Penguin, however, is decidedly more optimistic.
