Eric Martin, head writer on Loki season 2, has spoken up about the MCU slump, and has provided advice to Marvel Studios on how to solve its recent issues. Eric Martin, known for his work writing on Heels and Rick and Morty, worked as a writer on Loki season 1 before taking on the role of head writer for the second season in Phase 5. Martin worked on all six episodes of the Tom Hiddleston-led Loki season 2, which concluded with an epic finale on November 10, 2023, helping to deliver one of the most popular MCU installments in recent years, as several other projects have been met with scrutiny.
In the wake of Loki season 2's finale, "Glorious Purpose," Eric Martin spoke to Esquire to discuss the series and the potential futures of Loki's beloved characters including Sylvie, Mobius, and Ouroboros. However, Martin also discussed the wider world of the MCU and superhero cinema, including the recent criticism that Marvel Studios has faced with projects including Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Thor: Love and Thunder. When asked where he thought superhero storytelling would go in the next five-to-ten years, Martin responded with a simple "Does anybody know?," before gifting Marvel Studios some advice on what projects should be focused on in the coming years.
Does anybody know? I don't think anyone knows where Hollywood is going from year to year. I think we all have guesses. At the end of the day, it just comes down to making things that people want to see. And I haven't noticed less engagement, because my experience is all with Loki. I'm not sure with anything else, but I haven't seen any dip in enthusiasm. I've seen an increase. The fans of the show seemed like they've only gotten more excited about it. So, I don't know what to read. We can all kind of decipher that how we will. But I think we made a good show and people like it. At the end of the day, that's what it's about–you make something that's quality. You can connect with the audience, and the audience is going to connect with you.
